So, I've always thought my tranny shifted roughly, but I had no idea HOW rough until I road Roadtrip's Speedmaster last week. It barely made a sound as I clicked through the gears. On my bike there's usually a loud THUNK in all gears but especially when going from neutral to 1st. It's been doing this for the entire five years I've own it. I think I mentioned it to the dealer a few years ago and he blew it off as being 'just the way it is.'
Secondly, on a potentially related note, I've been noticing lately that when I shift it doesn't make it all the way into the next gear. Sometimes it's as if there's a neutral between every gear. It doesn't happen all the time but it's been happening with greater frequency this summer.
Any ideas on either quandry? Could they be related?

I'd bet they are related. Clutch perhaps?

So... if the clutch was worn it wouldn't fully disengage the power whilst shifting? I don't feel any dragging when sitting still, in gear, with the clutch engaged. It doesn't pull forward. Or is that not a good indicator?

More likely the opposite, weakend clutch springs not engaging the clutch plates properly. The fluid should provide some drag all of the time in a wet clutch system so you should always feel some drag, even if it is ever so light. Or, (let's hope NOT) the not-so-happy out of adjustment shift dog(s) inside the tranny that aren't actuating the gears properly as they slide back and forth in the transmission. I'm betting springs but I'm a poor gambler. The constant neutral in between gears points more toward out of alignment shift dogs.

That sounds ugly. Unfortunately that's out of my knowledge/experience level, and I don't have a trustworthy mechanic within a few hundred miles. Maybe I could take it to the Edmonton dealership (I just checked - Edmonton is just as far as Seattle). I just need to know if this is serious enough, i.e. indicative of a real problem, so I can get it sorted out before my ride to southern California this September.
Of, if I can make it down there, have SoCal Triumph take a look while I'm visiting the fam.

i get a loud clunk from N to 1st, also pretty loud from 1st to 2nd, but never had the neutral in every gear. occasional i have trouble going from 1st to 2nd if i am racing it but i think that is normally me either not shifting it right or not using enough pressure when shifting

Transmission work is all about clearances and tolerances in the + or - .001" range and requires patience sorting it all out. Best to find a quality shop that has all of the proper thrust washers and spacers on hand if you're going to have to pursue that route, preferably with some revered old geezer that scares the rest of the mechanics. You have to pass through a momentary neutral to shift anyway as the gears slide back and forth on their respective shafts in the tranny since you can't begin engaging one while in contact with the another, it's the dog postion that places them in the correct alignment for each gear and that's the fine tuning that you're likely lacking...sounds like you might have started on the "wide" side new and normal wear has moved you past optimal location.

Calgary would be closer than Edmonton by 200 miles. I sure hope what is happening with your bike is not that serious and/or ugly. My Speedmaster also is not a smooth sounding shifter but I though (not owning a triumph before) it was the way it was. Keep us updated as it sounds like others are having the same sounds.
But if you do come as far as Edmonton, just let me know and I can show you some good riding roads (though not as good as the Kootenay)

Like many things I suppose this is a wait'n'see situation. If it gets noticeably worse I'll make arrangements on my trip route to have someone look at it (sorry, Soren, I'm taking a left at Reno and going through Yosemite  ). Hopefully it's not a major teardown issue.

Myette, I probably meant Calgary. It just seems like everyone I know in Alberta (except RSD) lives in or around Edmonton.

John, my experience with Blackfoot Motorsports in Calgary has not been very good. In frustration when I went up the food chain I finally got some good service. Let me know if you need to go this route, and I'll send you the email of the service department manager.
