When I press the electic start, all I hear is spinning. My bike jump starts and runs fine once started but when I press the start button it just spins, sounds like it is just not engaging the motor to start it. Has anyone ever experienced this?

How's the state of the battery ?, a low state of charge could be responsible

Battery is fine. I just went out and tried to start it again and it made a painful noise and then went back to spinning. Again, jumped off fine and ran fine but won't start. I am thinking this noise might be an expensive one. Bike only has 600 hundred miles on it!

Did your bike make a nasty noise at all? And when not cranking, did it just sound like a wheel spinning fast or do nothing? I am wondering if it is the battery since the lights are coming on fine and when I press the electric start it spins and spins it just doesn't start. Is it possible for a bike with only 600 miles on it to have a dead battery? Thanks.
Also, can anyone tell me the proper battery charger to use or if I can use my standard charger I use for my boat battery?

by jump start do you mean roll it and pop the clutch? or use jumper cables/booster or wehatever? a battery tender works wonders

I mean roll it and pop the clutch. I just picked it up today from the 600 mile service and a new pipe install. The pipes sound soo good and all I want to do is ride but it won't start.

Trickle is the best. If your charger supports this, you can use it. However, if your bike only has 600 miles on her, you should take it back to the dealer and say WTF?

If, as you say the sound is a spinning sound when you press the start button and bike doesn't crank over it's probobly the starter motor solenoid not throwing in or possibly the starter motor engage gear. Hoffo

Please check the battery ground. Both ends. And then go back to the dealer and say WTF?

Based on my VERY limited knowledge and how it sounds, I would say it is the enage gear, it really sounds like it is simply not engaging. Every now and then it will try to grab and makes a nasty sound but it will never actually turn the bike over.

drop back to the dealer - clearly a warranty issue.

BTW , Phil said trickle charge - he's correct , this is usually the 2 amp setting on an all - night charge , take out battery out - safer for your bike - batteries can go boom , I know .

The prime rule of troubleshooting: go back to the last thing done to modify the bike and take a hard look. Something from the 600 mile service and the pipe install caused this, it's not a coincidence. Back to the dealer's shop!

Check the connections, they likely disconnected it during whatever they did and maybe didn't cinch it down enough and you have partial contact and not getting enough volts to kick the starter in the butt.
What they said, dealer issue, 2 year un-limited milage warrenty. You safe safe.

Check battery connections to the battery? Or check electrical connections to the starter?

Both the battery would be an easy place to start. Seems odd, putting pipes on takes 10 minutes and the removal of 8 bolts none of which are near anything electrical.

I was thinking more along the lines of the 600 mile service and the ubiqitous "disconnect the battery" that every repair in the Triumph manual begins with. I suspect the battery ground to the frame more than the battery terminal itself, but the starter terminals are another good palce to look. It just can't be a coincidence that the 600 mile service and this happened back-to-back.

I agree. However, they did do a standard 6 hundred mile checkup which may involve some electrical.

Do you think a loose connection would result in nothing at all? Because I am getting something (sounds like something spinning at a high speed), it is just not engaging the motor at all. Thanks for all the input. Hopefully I can get it running tonight because my dealer is not open today and I am leaving town for three days before they open tomorrow

It's likely a poor/loose ground would provide enough juice to spin the starter but not engage the solenoid and thrust the starter pinion into the drivetrain (but, without a manual I admit this is a guess based on previous experiences).

from the Mexican Mechanic (Man-u-al )  ......Starter motor rotates but engine does not turn over Starter clutch defective Damaged idle/reduction gear or starter gears. Sounds like a warrenty job by the dealer. 
If you do it today you MIGHT regret it. If you CAN'T do it tomorrow you WILL regret it.

Agree with Huffo and Brummie. Sounds like the starter solenoid is burnt out, and won't push the starter gear foward to engage the flywheel. The starter motor shaft just spins but there is no engagement to the flywheel. At least that is what would be wrong on a car, and I don't have the motorcycle repair manual here at work with me.

Either that or the bendix but I am not sure what the set up is in our bikes.

Just got the call from the dealer, under warranty but it is a "looong" fix he said. Apparently, 2005 and earlier models have some sort of pin that feeds into the starter motor which engages the gear, my pin broke and when it broke it cracked the casing which houses the starter. Dealer said he had seen this only once before. Guess I can pride myself in having a non-unique bike. 2-3 weeks with NO ride.  Oh well, at least I am not coughing any cash up. Thanks for all the input though guys, wish it was something I clda fixed myself....

Ha those pipes are cursed, cursed I tell ya. That is just what happened to mine. Triumph will put upgraded cases on your bike. You must have had one ****** of a backfire to spin it backwards at least thats what happened to me. Whine about it to them and ask for a loaner I got a sprint for 3 weeks.

Oh and they claim its not a common break but my dealer had a standard bonnie in for the exact same reason when mine got rebuilt. Now I just need a new cdi.
