I have known Pit Bull Terriers. They're sweet, and loveable dogs. One, in fact, was like a co-dependant lap cat.

If Michael Vick was indeed involved in the murderous blood-sport of pit bull dog fighting, it is my hope that he and his cohorts are delt the harshest possible sentence.

That goes for any one doing this to any dog in my mind

It would seem that Vick's whole family might not be MENSA members.
Little brother gets busted for drugs and guns. Cousin for drugs and now this.
This is sick. And I really hope he is going to jail for it.

I have an idea, in some states people who are convicted of murder are sentanced to death. Let's use that same logic to people who are convicted of dog fights, put them in a ring and let them fight to the death the one that wins get to get locked in a cage (jail) and the one that doesn't... oh well guess it his fault for not being a better fighter.

Hopefully the Falcons take a page from the Bears and Tank Johnson, and get rid of him.

I too hate people like that I am a long time Pitbull owner. There are pix of the 2 I currently own in my gallery,one is a mix. Both are loveable dogs although due to past abuse (before they were members of my family) the one hates men but loves women and kids.I have had Pits in the past too and one was the best dog I ever owned. I hate the way these idiots make them nasty and then all of a sudden they are bad as a breed. They are powerful dogs and if you make one mean you have a very bad dog. But on the other hand if you care for one as a member of youyr family you can't ask for a more loyal , friendly , playful , protective , loveable family member.I totally agree with the on 2 men enter one man leaves thing. (What's wrong with me? There I go agreeing with Friarjohn again! ) I think animal abuse and harm to animals should be punishable in the same maner and severity as it is when people are killed or abused. As anyone can see I feel very strongly on this issue I in the most part like animals more than people. (not in a sick way Dwight)

I agree 100%. I have always had a problem with Mike Vick in Atlanta... always seemed he was just a thug with alot of money. The league doesn't require intelligence of its gifted athletes... just gives them alot of money and little education in respect and public opinion. I do think it is funny how the investigation wraps up with an indictment the week before training camp starts.
The problem with Atlanta, seems to be as soon as they lose a quarterback, he goes somewhere else and becomes the huge star he was supposed to be when he was here...example... Chris Miller, Bret Favre, Billy Joe Tolliver...etc... so maybe a better punishment would be to make him go to jail and then have to come back to the Falcons to finish his career...ride safe...Gordon

I would agree here, especially with Dog. I would LOVE to get a Rot, BUT, because of the rap they get, along with dogs like Pit Bulls, German Shepards, and Dobermans, my wife won't even entertain the thought. Yes, a Rot is an imposing dog, but so was my step dads old Yellow Lab when he threw his front paws on your shoulders and stood face to face with me (I'm 6 feet even!) But, thanks to scum like this teaching them to fight, and the rep that they're only good for ripping intruders at factories (or escapees from Prison Camps) limb to limb, no such luck!

It's really all about how they're raised, isn't it? I'm a giant breed lover myself and having one of those gentle giants around is such a pleasure. My favoites so far have been two Newfoundlands, followed closely by a Great Pyrenees...all of which truly intimidated strangers because of their size, not their nature; they were just sweet teddy bears...

Yeah, I admit I used to be a Michael Vick fan. Its POS like him that have given the pit breed such a bad rap they're not even legal to have in Denver County. Not even legal to transport through it. Like pit bulls are some kind of hazardous waste or something. There are so many pits exterminated every year here because they were "confiscated," especially after the law overturned for a short time, then re-instated.

You can take the athlete out of the streets, but not the streets out of the athlete, I guess.

Michael Vick, like Allen Iverson, making Virginia proud. Now there's a couple of America's finest. Think of them next time you buy Falcons or Rockets tickets/paraphernalia.

I'll stick with Dick Butkus for my sports hero. At least he did his damage on the field.

On the extermination note, They would have to go through me to get to either one of my innocent dogs. I would protect them to the end just as I would one of my children.
Newfoundlands are wonderful dogs , I have known a few but so are Pitbulls and most any other dog thats loved and treated well. As Ed said I can remember when Dobermans were the evil dogs and before that it was Germanshepards , Rotweilers are also considered bad these days (they are very 1 person oriented) But I have known a few that were very cool dogs. It is a shame that any dog is put down just because of the breed they were born and even worse are the poor dogs that were so badly mistreated and fought that there is no alternative left but to put them down it really weighs heavily on my heart.

Shoot, don't come to Denver Ian, they'll try and take your loud pipes and your dog; and your cigarettes if you'd like to smoke anywhere but home.

The older I get, the more I like dogs, and the less I like people.

Gnasher- a chinese crested is a really scary dog to see and has Rottweillers shakin when he walks past( his breath stinks!!)- the worlds ugliest dog is in America and was also a Chines Crested ( google it) and you will see what he may turn out like....its all down hill now as I often tell mrs RodYork-

I agree with you 200% Mike, it's wrong. My sister has two of the sweetest pitbulls ever - they even drink beer! But don't dare mention OJ slashing his ex-wife's head off and killing her white boyfriend.

I agree with Ian and a few others here that the breed of dog has almost nothing to do with their disposition. All the Pitbulls that are taken to my local dog park are pussycats, because their owners really care about them. If fact, my one dog Moose, who a black mixed mutt of about 40 lbs(we think he's some kind of Spaniel/Tazmanian Devil mix...or as we call him..."a SPAZ") will sometimes scare away one of these docile Pitbulls or other dogs 4 times his size when they get a little too "friendly" for his tastes by almost mimicking that Warner Bros. cartoon character.(the spinning, the slobbering and all)

It's a riot to watch.

And Trixie our other dog, a Doobie/Lab/Sheperd mix, is now 16 year old, but ever the trooper, she's still up for that almost daily dog park visit.

I love dogs.(especially mutts)

The pitbulls are great, as long as they never taste fresh blood. Then they'll do ANYTHING to get another taste.

The Pit bull thing is especially rampant on the South Atlanta area where I live , every crack peddler has one hand holding up his pants and another one holding a snapping Pit on a chain . Sad , at least once per week is a news story of a mauling or a dog fight bust - Vick is an idiot .

The anger about breeds, bans, and how good they really are discussion is nice in theory.

Please understand the other side too. Tell that argument to a mom whose kid was torn to pieces by two pits raised in the house next door who always acted like lap dogs for years. Tell her its just a mistake and her two year old was worth the risk and the owners right to keep them.

Its not a coincidence when you hear of a kid being killed by dogs that you can guess the breed (pit or rot) before you read the article. They bite and kill most.

Read about genetics, read about why they were bred. Fighting is what they do, fighting is what they were bred for. Its not their fault, its mans fault but it just is.

Skillet is right. There are exceptions but I would not risk my kids life on exceptions.

A wolf or a toy poodle have the same dna stucture. They are all hunters, some much better than others. A bad poodle can't do the damage a bad pit can, so the pit get the bad rap. Know your dog and your abilities to control it.

It's not the breed that is a load. There are bad examples of any breed just as there are bad examples of people. Do you exterminate all humans or a particular race because a few are bad? Do you exterminate all Germans because Hitler was German? It is the same thing. If you want to get right down to statistics in most studies that I have seen Dalmations are one of the most likely to attack and Pitbulls are pretty far down the list usually in the 10th to 12th spot. So I guess we have to exterminate all dogs on that list that are above Pitbulls too,some are the smaller animals mentioned above.Because 1 was bad and attacked someone child or adult. I have also found most of the child attacks are because the child was taunting or throwing rocks or some other antagonistic act. Tell moms to control their kids and teach them right from wrong and those attacks will go way down by any breed. Seems it has become that there are no parenting skills these days but thats a whole other can of worms.

The lists goes on; we ban pits and rots, a chow or dobey will attack someone, and they'll be out. Then it'll be a german shepard or St. Bernard, then a dalmation or a ticked off lab, and on and on.

The answer is stiff penalties for the owners of violent dogs (like Vick's sorry butt,) not banning the dogs themselves.

I trust my 2 good natured Labs 99%. I trust my good natured Shepherd 90%. The Shepherd will chase running people of any size and nip at thier heels, just like her job was when her ancestors were bred. She is very defensive of her property with other dogs as well. Hmmmmmm... just like she was bred for. She does not have free range out of the fenced yard like I occasionnaly give the Labs. I know my dogs, but I've never trusted any of them 100%.

All states require reporting on this stuff. Sorry you don't believe it Ian. I didn't make it up. I love dogs as much or more than anybody. Pits and Rottweilers are the major killers of the top 5 which include German Sheppard, Chow, and Doberman. Almost all states list this as the big 5. They didn't do it for fun, they reacted to the numbers.

The DNA is the same for dogs, the genetics are altered by selection. The most aggressive they keep and the weak die. A Bassett Hound and a Greyhound are related. Lets race em and bet, you take the Bassett. Oh, and lets fight a Rottie and a Collie, you bet on the Collie.
