Like a metal on metal clonk? I get a puff or two out of the exhaust after I cut mine but that's it...

Herb:
I hear a distinct "metal klunk" on shutdown - not too loud, can't hear it unless my helmet is off, so I'm not even sure it happens every time. But it has been there since Day One. As far as I'm concerned - it's normal - just the nature of the beast. I don't worry about it. I think some of our more mechanically-inclined members would have an explanation?
BTW, is it the same when using the kill switch as opposed to the key?

isn't that the starter solenoid throwing out the starter drive gear for the next start?

Hi Cat, I don't know what it is. I also get a puff or two out of my pipes, but never noticed a clonk sound. What I hate is on startup - my starter sounds just like a 1964 Plymouth Valiant. Ride safe, Dennis

Herb, I heard that sound many times and discovered that the starter drive gear is activated if the engine on shutdown rotates or is kicked backwards just a little. I'm shure you dont hear it every time you kill the engine but often enough to cause concern. If the klunk sound your hearing is the same as mine then dont worry it's normal, In the future get off the bike while the engine's running and kill the bike while holding a gloved hand on the starter and you'll feel the klunk there. Like I said it won't happen every time but you'll catch it after a few times. Good luck klunk hunting Tmax

Mine normally gives me a pneumatic noise, that I can only label as a wheeze; sounds like a last chunk of air either getting sucked in through the slides, or getting kicked back, never heard anything that sounded clunky on shut down..

As often as not, the engine stops far enough up the compression stroke that there is enough pressure to push the piston back down, turning the engine backward. This engages the starter over-running clutch, which could be causing your noise. If it is extra loud or gets louder with time, there are a few things that may need to be checked like the cam chain tensioner and the alternator roter.

My '03 TBA sounds exactly like Phils, two slight pops in the exhaust and the occasional starter clutch. No big deal. The stock exhaust sounds the same with or without the AIS upon shutting down. I have just over 10,000 miles on mine and it's getting smoother all the time. Jay

I was getting a wheezzz, puff and fa*t out of mine on shut off and a member suggested to someone else that air might be getting in somewhere so on inspection I tightened the clamps from the engine to the carbs and now it only wheezzzers so I am happy with that.

Your bike makes a wheezing sound? Boy what a relief, for the longest time I thought it was me.
