Just after topping off tank for a long one, it started to lose power. I have heard before of gas caps not venting so I unscrewed it enough to allow it to vent. Regained power immediatley. Repeated the same problem after I screwed it back on tight, same thing. Started to bog down. Anyone have this happen to them before? I guess I'll have to hit the dealer for a new one. Jack

It's not the cap, it's the vent line. Well, as I type this I wonder a couple of things, how long have you had the bike, and has this happened before? It doesn't usually 'happen out of the blue' but rather on a brand spankin new machine or if you've had the tank off for some reason. There's also a vent valve in the vent line. The vent line is under the right side of the tank against the frame backbone and if you raise and lower the tank it too easily becomes pinched. The vent valve is in that line behind the carbs and if it fails will create the same symptom as a pinched line. Of course, if you've put thousands of miles on the machine, never had the tank off, and it just now happens but clears with the cap unscrewed/vented, I think I'd look at the vent valve.

sounds like I'll have to take it into the dealer. Just turned 1000 miles and this was the first time it happened. Thanks

Might want to check that T filter too, but taking the tank off to check for a pinched line is a sinch...

According to the manual, the cap is supposed to have a 1 way vent built into it. That could be stuck closed or blocked. The 'vent' (really overflow according to Triumph) hose has a rolover valve stick in the end on bikes that don't have the CA emissions system. If the later models (the manual was printed before the Speedmaster went into production) really do vent through the hose, the rolover valve could be clogged or the hose pinched. When you take the tank off, the hose has a habit of laying on the right tank mounting rubber and getting squashed when you put the tank back on.

Solution most likely to be the culprit!!

Been there, done that, more ti9mes than I will admit in a public forum.
GAS SUX these days!
If it runs great, you gas up, it runs like Bin Laden (PC for $h1T), DOH! Bad GAS!!!!!
Cheap easy fix, put in your lawnmower and go for a ride on the bike.

Couldn't be the fuel since it ran fine with the cap cracked. We'll see what they say when I drop it off tomorrow

Looks like it was the vent hose. They said some gunk was in it from the factory and could have been hampering the function of the valve. Thanks for advise....
