ok i plan on doing my big bore in the next couple of months. this means i have a few expensive things to ship out jugs/heads. which would be the best to ship with, ups or dhl? i got rough prices and DHL is 10 bucks cheaper, but what is 10 bucks if the other provides a better service. this is expensive stuff so i want to make sure everything will be well and good. so who should i go with? thanks

I say UPS and to protect the head and jugs I found best way is to put a plastic bag in bottom of box and spray expanding foam insulation in it and set the part on it so it wraps parts way around it. The use a bag on each side and do the same either so it covers the top or a 4th bag on top trim to close the box. I have never had a broken fin or any other damage that way.
Plus it's very light.

be sure the foam doesn't touch the part and is only in the bag. It will stick to the part if it touches it and be a pain to clean off.

UPS or FEDEX would be my choices. And they usually go to more places than DHL

Go brown and pack well. Dog's suggestion is a good one. Pay for the insurance.

I have to agree with that - I have had numerous very expensive electronic bits totaled by UPS and it took them weeks each time to make good - they do make good, but by then it was a moot point.

I have had many problems with FedExd and won't even order from a company that uses them. Lost items they claimed were delivered when I was even home but never saw anything and definately were not delivered to my house. maybe someone elses house and they refuse to make good. Has happened more than once. I have had smashed packages from them too. Never again. UPS on the other hand I have never had a problem with and when I did get a damaged box the driver noted it and would have made good if the contents were damaged but only needed that once and it wasn't their fault in that case it wasn't packaged very well. Was a 10X20 tent and 1 pole had come out the end of the box and gotten scratched up.

UPS is ok. I used to drive for FedEx and they are also fine. DHL will also get it there. Get the coverage as they limit their liability to $100 if you don't. FedEx will usually pay even if you don't but they are not obligated to do so.
As long as they are properly packed you shouldn't have a problem. Improper packing causes at least 95% of the damage problems with all the shippers. A good sturdy outside box, shock absorbent materials (Plastic Peanuts), another sturdy box inside and good wrapping (bubble wrap) around the item.
The major hazard to a well wrapped package is getting lost, usually when the outer label gets lost. Make sure you put another label on the inside box or at least write the address and phone number for both you and the recipient and tape it to the inside box.
We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

I'm with atpeacewithbonnie on this one, even if he had an ulterior motive, Go USPS.
