Gotta be jets - the only thing that will get these sleds to 120 is a jet - as in Pratt & Whitney.

Like I said before mine does the 120 on my speedo but have been told the speedo is optimistic and upon checking it is. At 120 I am actually going somewhere around 115 mph.

Interesting.

The first time my wife and I went for a ride together (seperate bikes) she kept telling me to slow down. I was only doing 50-55 but she kept insisting I was doing more like 60-65.

A few days later I rode her bike to work and even though the speedo was telling me I was doing 85 I really wasn't passing people as fast as I thought I should be at that speed.

I'm going to bring a GPS along sometime and find out the real deal.

My Speedmaster will do 120.....
A couple weeks ago, me, Jaymo, the Yute and several others went on a nice long dice run and near the end of it we got a little wild and we all went far in excess of the ton, my speedo was buried as I flew by several other bikes like they were standing still.

I have been 109 verified by GPS. I doubt that there is much more speed from a BA with D&D pipes and a jet kit. I would check your speedometer.

it's in the gearing , you can get 120 out of a moped if it was geared right, might take awhile to get there and wouldn't do it up hill but it would do it. I know my SM does at the very least 115 easily.

The speedo's are off by an average of 10%. I have tested 3 bonnies, 2 SM's and a BA. All similar results. My SM seems to be just under 10%. 70mph on the speedo and a gps said 64mph.
I have hit an indicated 120mph on my SM under ideal conditions, no wind, flat road. I have no extras on the bike besides some chrome, no luggage. That was with the SM oem sprockets, not my belt drive, and the shield off. That's probably under 110mph actual speed. That was also while playing with the carbs and the mixture screws turned out almost 4 turns. I normally run at 3 turns as she runs better down low but would only hit an indicated 110mph on the same day (which by the way I have been meaning to ask you guys about).

110 up and down hills (there is no LEVEL in upstate SC or CT either!), no tailwind. Speedo indicated 115, so given the optimism (verified by timing a marked mile a couple times vs indicated 60mph), i'll stick by 110. More road and more balls and I believe it would climb a couple mph faster, but I don't like losing my license (and explaining what I was doing going 110 on my bike to my wife!) WHEN I move to CO, I'll give it a try in eastern CO/western Kansas where I CAN find flat ground....(and see the cops for 20 miles in any direction..)

I've seen the needle at 120 but I'll stop doing performance mods when the needle hits the H.

No, you couldn't.
Not without some serious streamlining.
It takes more horsepower to overcome the wind resistance as you go faster.
On a calm day, riding 120 mph is like sitting in a 120 mph wind (cat 3 hurricane).

When mine was new, I got 105 out of it once to see what she'd do. No mods. Last time I tried to keep up with Donny and Blast I could barely break 100, there was a small headwind. One of the guys we were with blew by us at 160 on his Suzuki 600. I agree with Bigbill that these bikes are a little scary over 100. If you want to go that fast buy a Hyabusa or Kaw 1400

i'm sure if you shed some weight do some engine mods the bike could do 120 to 130mph
engine mods cost money the faster you want it to go the more it cost
you have to evaluate the extra mph to the £
£1000 worth of engine mods to gain 10mph comes out at £100 per mile an hour extra, quite expensive

I disagree to a point Bill, I was exagerateing but if yoiu can make a 1966 snapper lawnmower go 60MPH our bikes are easily capable of 120 mph geared properly. I was just at 115 on 80 yesterday probably an actual 110 give or take a little and still had throttle.

Sure Ian, with the right gearing and the usual modifications, these bikes would do 120.

But why? (Oh, I know about the "because I can" factor )

Get a bike designed for it if you want to go that fast.

I was just calling you on your hyperbole with the moped .

I know and I am very well aware there is more to it. I want my bike to be fast for what it is but I'm not looking for a sport bike. I just like to get on it and play once in awhile the bulk of my riding is on 45 MPH roads (I ride 60 to 70 on them) and have fun in the twisties. I stay in my lane and know the roads very well and am not pushing the envelope. I am capable of higher speeds in the same corners leaving me room to manuver in an emergency. Point is I love my bike and am not looking for very fast just fast for what it is and I have that.

I had 108 on the speedo on the 03, and could have done more.

BUT

I was going down hill at the time.

AND

I chickened out of going any faster.

I didn't buy either of my Americas to go fast, but I was just curious.

Gina 03 America - Pretty stock - except the TBS wheel... 06 America - missing, presumed in bits. With it's TBS wheel... 09 America - It's very blue....

You'll not see me on a sportbike because I don't like to sit like a constipated frog whilst I'm riding. But, thinking about it, I don't have a street going vehicle other than the Servicar that can't easily do a tonne up.

Not so fast.
I did some riding with a GPS and the results brought me down on the earth.
Speedo reading 190 km/h actual speed 170
Speedo reading 160 km/h actual speed 144
Speedo reading 120 km/h actual speed 109
Speedo reading 60 km/h actual speed 55
and I removed even the snorkel heh.

Folks it sounds to me that you all are a looking for something like a V-Max. 116mph in a quarter, will that do it for you.
