OK I'll second that didn't think of him. I tend to listen to lead guitar and not the bass as much.

Mike Anthony from Van Halen. Saw him play a 15-20 minute solo a few years back and was blown away.

How can you rule out Sir Paul McCartney....perhaps not for his Bass playing alone but for his over all contributions to the music world while playing a bass...and a Piano...and a guitar...6 and 12 string...and drums...and...and...

I don't know about the best bass player, but my cousin is a heck of a bass fisherman

We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

All of today's best players owe a great debt to James Jamerson and Larry Graham. And, really, can anyone top Leland Sklar?

John Entwistle
Mel Schacher (as taught by Mark Farner who is also a fabulous bass player, hence the lead patterns in mels bass)
mike anthony
but then again to many to list, there is a guy that plays in a local band here that would blow your mind, plays a 5 string and will blow the roof off all by himself. look at Jazz bassman, there you will find some of the worlds greats of all times

It's about time someone brought Squire up. He is da man!!!! Although Jack Bruce was the one that actually got me to start playing. That was many moons ago. Still playing though. Me and three other old farts.(Actually 2 other old farts and one younger guitar master.)

Excellent! He also plays with Dennis Chambers (drums) and John Novello (keyboards) in a very high-powered jazz-rock band (instrumental) called Niacin.

A friend of mine has a video that Flea did with River Phoenix. It was like a tutorial/interview thing. Flea rocked of course, and River looked so coked out... IT was scary!
