This forum has a wide and varied audience as far as tastes goes (outside of the bikes we love to ride). I am wondering what the collective belief will be on what rock band is the best.
I have always maintained that AC/DC is the quintessential, most-importantly, no-hands-down, best-of-all-there-is, rock-and-roll band that ever existed.
They have produced some of the best and most solid rock tunes for the last 20 years. I have been involved in the music scene for a good part of my life and cannot think of any other group that comes close to these boys from down-under.
Are there any challengers out there?

Love AC DC but I can't really choose a fav. Pink Floyd is up there , Allman Bros., The Dead , Cream , Traffic etc... I like them all Led Zep , Old Sabbath ,Deep Purple , Stevie Ray Vaughn sp?,my list is endless.

As my icon may support im gona have to run with slayer, they have been pumping out thrash for longer then ive been alive.

Okay, great bands to be sure. But let's talk about staying power... and sustainability. (btw - I have everything Stevie ever put on tape/cassette/cd, etc...)

I agree with you all, but "THE WHO" put out some of the best music, IMO.

The absolute best band of all time, without question, the hands down, no contest winner... The Doors.

Followed by (from various genres and order may be debatable) based on overal musical talent, not necessarily favorite bands, but I do like all of these:

I have to be honest and not include some of my favorite punk bands as best ever bands, great stuff but not fully rounded out talent. Even the Ramones (as awesome as they were) were three chord wonders, not complete musicians.

I debated on adding Boston to the list, but when you make three identical albums, that kinda eliminates you from a best ever list (should have made one album and called it a day).

At this time of my life I would have to say Rush. Their latest CD Snakes and Arrows is great and shows why they are as well. As far as longevity they have been around since 1974 and have released 32 LPs/CDs/DVDs.

Also Neal Peart is an avid rider and has written a couple of books about his experiences and riding. They are on my list of books to read someday.

I will listen to just about anything, BUT, when it comes to my favorite.

Well i get slammed for admitting this, but oh well. Ive been getting slammed now for the best part of 30 years.

My favorite band, and in my opinion no one can hold a light to this band. The best rock band in the world bar none is KISS.

Ive been lucky enough to see lots of very good bands live but nothing gets me going more than hearing God of Thunder, Detroit Rock City, Love Gun, Strutter, Black Diamond, Cold Gin, and other equally fist pumping, head banging tracks from the kings of rock than KISS. Saw them for the first time in London in 1980 and have seen them 15 times since.

In my mind they are quite simply the Masters of Rock, and do not get nearly the credit they deserve.

Incidently, saw Paul Stanley onn his solo tour in Atlanta last year and he was absolutely brilliant. Even got to see Gene Simmons. He sat about five seats away from me.

KISS did rock! But just for a relatively few years. I really like KISS myself, but truly don't think they even come close to what AC/DC has accomplished.
RUSH! OH My goodness I Love Rush! However, they have been a tad flakey in their career. Undoubtably, they are the most educated of all bands. They are definitely the Thinking Mans Rock Band. Unfortunately, to truly understand what RUSH says you really have to be sober. NOT a good point with the rock-and-roll crowd. RUSH is too freakin intelligent to qualify for this poll.
I know, it's not fair. I appreciate RUSH more than any of my contemporaries, but "The Trees" just doesn't even come close to "Shot Down In Flames" in my book.

Rush is currently on their Snakes and Arrows tour. Just looked it up Neil Peart has written 4 books. Two of them about riding. The first is titled The Masked Rider and the other is Ghost Rider.

Yep, I LOVE Motorhead. They are raw power!

the fact that lemmy is 10ft tall and bullet proof helps too.

Don't get me wrong I love a lot of other bands including most that have been mentioned thus far in this thread, but other than the Stones no other band has been around as long or as prolific as Rush. AC/DC I loved when Bon Scott was the front man, but just not exactly the same after. Kiss I loved also, but they only lasted for a short period. I still wish they never revealed who they really were, because for me that was part of their appeal.

I always loved Triumph and Kansas. But my all time favorite r&r band ~~ Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Greatful Dead has been around forever gone now due to Jerrys death. Sold out every show.

KISS was a GREAT Band, unfortunately, their staying-power wained. I'm pretty sure they all decided to invest their profits and live a life of luxury.
HOWEVER, AC/DC still continues to pound out excessively solid rock tunes every year to the delight of their fans.
KISS can't touch that!

Forgot to put Led Zep on my list. Bump everything don a notch and put tham at #2 on my list.

AC/DC, not one of the all time greats. One of the all time classics and great at what they do, but nowhere, no how one of the best bands of all time. They have one sound, that's it.

Rush's Moving Picture album was in my opinion their best album, awesome album indeed.

Kiss was a great until they did a disco album that tore it for me.

Led Zepplin was great. but where are they now? I also love the ZEP, but there is nothing in recent years to support their stance as a super band.
C'Mon, folks - can you really name a group that has produced as much as AC/DC has in the last 25 years?
BTW - Moving Pictures was one of my faves as well...

Sort of shows my age - my favorite all time albums are Disrali Gears (Cream) followed closely by Aqualung (Jethro Tull) & Demons & Wizards (Uriah Heep)

You asked for the best of all time. Not the longest lasting or most material.
I would include Blind Faith on a list of top ten greatest, and they only did one album. In 1969.

LZ had a major impact not only on the music itself, but on production when they told their label (forget who it was ) to stuff it, and formed their own production company, Swan Song Records.

I love all the bands that you guys have mentioned but no one has mentioned "Queen" - surely they rate up there with the greats. And one of my other old favourites (sorry about the UK spelling) is Genesis - They are doing a European tour and I saw them last Sunday, I hope you guys over the pond get to see them.

All I get from this thread is that Bikers in general, and most of the people on this board in specific are old or old souled.

Why hasn't anybody mentioned any newer bands? Does more modern music not rate?

There are so many to choose from, no one has yet mentioned Bad Company, Free, Iggy Pop and the Stooges, Uriah Heep, Yes, Foghat, Marshall Tucker Band, Green Day, Nirvana...the list is too long...

The Beatles, the Stones and Led Zepplin top the list for music sales if that counts.

Rocking out to the Best of Deep Purple this morning on my 2 hour commute to work.

The best ever wasn't around too long - Dire Straits.
My favorite - Steely Dan.
Best concert ever - Grateful Dead at Cow Palace (1972?).
Worst concert ever - Grateful Dead at Fresno Sports Arena. (1974).

What group really is the best?
Keep in mind, we "seasoned" members grew up during the best
musical period in history, all genres.
