I seem to have spilled some oil on the garage floor during my most recent oil change. Soap and water doesn't work...any suggestions for cleanup? A friend suggested kerosene and kitty litter...was he just pulling my leg?

I hear seagulls work real well.

I don't know if they work, but click here to see various methods.

If you are working on concrete, then that's not too bad, the kerosene will release the oil and the kitty litter will just pull it up and absorb it. If the surface is tarmac, trying this will just reduce the surface to 1/2" agg plus dust 'cause the solvent will pull up the bitumen too, not so good! Even if its concrete, its going to leave a stain, but if its tarmac/ashfelt, this trick will leave a hole.

Easy-Off Oven Cleaner. Then hose it off. Works great, but be careful where the runoff goes. It will nearly kill any plants it touches, but in a few weeks will be a super fertilizer for those same plants. The kitty litter is the same thing as "oil-dry" but a little cheaper. I'd use the kitty litter (the cheap stuff only) first, then hit it with the oven cleaner if you're not satisfied.

Zep makes a good concrete cleaner that works on oil if you have access to their stuff.

The author warns of the dangers of TSP, yet makes no mention of the carcinogenic / toxic properties of benzene, including
hazard by inhalation. Don't know why, but it just struck me as funny.
Think I need a long vacation in the Tropics.

Whatever you do, don't use a torch to try to burn flammables out of concrete.
The concrete will explode when the entrained air expands, sending small chunks flying. (Don't ax me how I know this...)

See, now this is why I love this place - I learn something every day! Now I know why my old garage floor kept exploding!

Speedy-Dry (Cat Letter) will clean it up, if you use a little extra force to grind it in. A small area won't need much, normaly just use my shoe. But on a larger area I use a small 2x4, about seven inches long, and scrub by hand.

Actually that is a good one. You let it sit for a few minutes then rinse it off. The trick is to use Coke, not Pepsi.
