I wondered after reading a few of the respones in the Other Bike Forum about the coming new 1500cc "Super Bonnie" probably having shaft-drive, why it seems a few of the guys around here would automatically discount purchasing one of them if it came equiped with this sort of drive system.
I certainly wouldn't discount or rule out a shaft drive scooter. However, I am drawn to what I describe as purist motorcycles first and foremost.
This purist in me suggests that a 'proper' motorcycle has pegs and not running boards - They're for trucks
This purist in me suggests that a 'proper' motorcycle has gobs of wind rushing into your head and torso - Windshields are for taxis and buses.
This purist in me suggests that a 'proper' motorcycle has a chain. However much a chain can be a pain in the butt. However much noise they make. However antiquated they may seem.
The only real exception would be if I were to buy a purpose build touring ride. The reasons would be purely comfort and convenience - and I'm not sure it would feel very motorcycle-ish to me.
Not a criticism of anyone else’s tastes or preferences - They’re just mine.

a model T is a car. i'm for a 1500 cc triple with fuel injection. duel disk brakes. alloy wheels or spoked wheels without tubes. hardbags and a top case would be nice. road lights and engine guards as standard. a windshield should be a option. you should be able to order your bike equipped from the triumph factory. have it your way. SHAFT DRIVE! AMEN!! i like to ride. not repair . joe

You are right Pipedr. We have a bucket full of shaft drive cruisers to pick from that have all the bugs worked out of them for the last 30 years. All the Hondayamakawasukis run like Swiss wrist watches with huge dealer networks. There is no more soul in a hondayamabeamer clone with Triumph badges than there is in a HondaHarley Sabre or VTX. Then again! It will be designed in England. Probably won't be built there but they drew it up at least. As each year goes by I see a healthy flock of sheep forming.

I like the chain. I can carry an extra chain. I can put a masterlink in my tool kit. I can carry chain wax. I also can use it as a weapon if I am attacked by someone who doesn't like how loud my pipes are roaring.

My last two bikes before the BA were shaft drives and I liked them, but that is also the reason I am pretty ignorant when it comes to chain mantanence.

Well then Jack, you appear to be in luck! It looks like Paul here can answer each and every question that you may have in this regard. (especially I guess if you're runnin' exhausts on your BA which aren't exactly the ones which were installed at the factory)

I'd rather see a belt, if it can handle the torque. HD sales prove most cruiser customers like the looks of the belt.

Ya know Al, when I was a kid, that's the last thing I would'a ever said to my Pop whenever he told me to go to my room and he'd be there in a few minutes!

Actually, I don't know why but I've never really warmed to the idea of a belt-drive system.(maybe that stems from some childhood trauma, huh?!...sorry, there I go again ), but I figure that between a chain and a belt drive, I'd rather go with the chain, because as Paul noted, a chain can be fixed on the side of the road.

I really doubt that the belt has anything to do with it. More of a model for successful marketing campaigns.

But...But....its gonna be a parallel Twin ideally. That in and of itself will separate it from all the jap Hardley clone V-twins out there.
A 1500 CC Parallel twin will sell like hotcakes I says. The appeal will be there. The market is salivating for something out of the ordinary that packs more punch than our little twins and does not look ugly like the Rocket 3. Shaft or belt it will be the bike to own.

You do realize though that most people don't want to be different, they want to belong. They WANT to be like everybody else. They WANT to be a member of the herd...even if it's a million other black sheep like themselves.

If it looks anything like the "conceputal" drawing with a shaft-drive, EFI, and in-line engine, it falls into the "all-other" generic metric category. No heritage, no legacy, no sale. Too early to tell.

Umm...that's just a photoshop job on the mythical Rocket III touring rig that's supposed to debut sometime this year or next. See, it's got 3 exhaust pipes.

Yep Tom, I think Derek is right here. This is what I'm guessing the Interstate Touring RocketIII will look like. It may not be "heritage oriented" by any stretch, but I believe if the boys at Hinckley don't offer something along this line, then they're REALLY going to miss out trying to woo the Goldwing and BMW LT crowd, of which I feel they've missed out on lo these last two years by not already offering something along this line.... (thanks for the pic, Soren)

i test rode a k1200lt last week. it was at the triumph dealer. i could stand to give up the BA. IF THE BIKE SAID TRIUMPH IT WOULD BE IN MY GARAGE. i would get the best of both worlds. my wife would be happy with the seat and ride and i would still be riding a triumph. triumph does not have a long distance tour bike for two up riding. the st or the tiger would cripple the passenger on a 500-600 mile ride. the bike above would be the ticket. sorry. i ahve spoke to a lot of passengers. you would have unbelievable power ,a great ride and a happy spouse. joe

You both posted pictures of touring bikes?? I thought it was to be a cruiser. I am confused as usual.
Cruisers are not normally stock baggers. Touring is stock baggers etc. A 1500cc cruiser to compete with VTX, V-Rod, Vulcan etc. is what I thought they were doing.
What could the price point be?? If you can buy a R3 and bag it out for 17-18k why buy the little twin? They would have to sell the middle twin at about 12k, if bagged out they kill the Tiger all together. Any cheaper they get into the Sprint and America markets.
I think they are making a naked V-rod like, bar hoping cruiser guys, I could be wrong?

Ron, they are supposed to give the touring treatment to the R-3 to compete with the Goldwing, Roadking, BMX LT aaand they are supposed to be developing a mid-size 1500 cruiser also, two new models... At least that's the word on the street...

I wouldn't not buy a bike because of it being shaft drive (I like the RIII and it's shaft). I would however prefer chain or belt.. so long as the bike looks good to me and is a pleasure to ride.. so be it if it's shaft just my 2 cents
07 TBA Pacific Blue and White.. stock for now!
A bike has half the wheels my cage does.. but 3x the fun factor

1. I don't like a motorcycle that tries to steer itself, shaft drives do that.
2. Many shaft designs make changing the rear tire a real chore. The V star that the OL had for a very short time is a prime example, you have to disassemble half the motorcycle to change the rear tire.
3. Right angle drives eat power.
4. They don't look right.
5. In spite of popular myth, they do require maintenance and it is much more complicated than spraying a chain or dusting off a belt.
6. They don't sound right.

Well GB, your subjective reasons are, of course valid. After all, it's A-OK to like what you like. However: Quote:
1. I don't like a motorcycle that tries to steer itself, shaft drives do that.
Has been overcome for the most part. In fact shaft driven bikes with longitudinal crankshafts have no gyroscopic effect and are easier to steer.

2. Many shaft designs make changing the rear tire a real chore. The V star that the OL had for a very short time is a prime example, you have to disassemble half the motorcycle to change the rear tire.
Many (and more and more on the newer designs) are a snap. Especially with a single sided swing arm. One nut or bolt, slide it off the spline shaft.

5. In spite of popular myth, they do require maintenance and it is much more complicated than spraying a chain or dusting off a belt.
Changing gear oil every 50 to 80K is no biggy. Some repairs now, can be a real PITA.
