With all the talk about saddle bags and the Idaho Invasion coming up, I figured I should start looking at some luggage. I found a 7 piece set of luggage on eBay for $45.99 ( http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayIS...TRK%3AMEWA%3AIT ). The description says that they are buffalo leather. Now, my instincts tell me that for $45.99 they can't be the best quality in the world, but on the other hand for that price, maybe I couldn’t go wrong. The biggest thing is, I have no idea what kind of quality buffalo leather is or how stiff the saddle bags are. Anyone have a clue? Think its worth bothering with? Thanx, Soren

Nothing wrong with buffalo leather but $45 for 7 pieces? Man, that's cheap! I'd bet the material and/or workmanship is also. I mean, he IS in business to make money so I wonder what HE is paying for them?
I'd ask him the weight or thickness of the leather AND his return policy before buying.

Good idea, I'll do that.

Looks like he is into the liquidation business. He also sells ss hip flasks, an integral part of a biker's travelling needs...
buffalo info
And here I thought buffalo were still near extinction....
Actually, for less than $50, if they last you a year you're ahead of the game....

Hey Soren, Phil & Don,
One thing to consider is the "diamond plate.. roman rock design" they mention. Both of those terms indicate that patchwork garbage. Could be nice buffalo leather, but if it's pieced together, the many seams WILL leak bad. The wind beating against it also makes it come apart. A friend of mine got a great deal on the same stuff at $58.00 + $15.00 S&H. On one 350 mile trip, with some heavy rain, he threw away 2 pieces. That was last summer and I don't know if he has any of it left. He later put a thin layer of cleat RTV on all the seams. I haven't seen him with luggage on his Valkyrie since he dug it out of his motorcycle shed this spring. I'll ask if it held up.
His wife got some buffalo leather side bags on her V-Star 650 and they are great. We have a place nearby in Corinth, Mississippi called Bar None Western wear. They don't sell online, but on the last Saturday of each month, all leather is 60%-70% off and if you ride your bike there, you get an additional 10% off total sale. My friend, mentioned above, got 2 vest, 2 chaps, 1 jacket and 3 windshield bags for $165.00. All quality goods (Unik, Vance, River Road and some others).
$45.00 ain't too bad for seven pieces of 1 season luggage if you seal it someway. May last a lot longer, but beware. Soren, I'm sure it'll get you to Idaho and back home.
Ya'll ride SAFE,

If a deal looks too good to be true- it is. I really don't think you'd be happy with this patchwork leather, in my experience it doesn't hold up. You get what you pay for- unless you buy a Harley.

Soren:
I have to agree with Dennis & Bob on this one - I bought a sissybar bag on Ebay to try the Buffalo/Diamond Plate stuff. It started to fall apart in about a month - & it's not worth having fixed - I got rid of it. IMHO, these bags etc. are better if made of leather, vinyl, synthetic, whatever - as long as they are not patched together from scraps!

Soren,
I was digging through the archives and ran across your post. I bought this set and have the saddle bags on my Speedy. For $45.00 I figured I couldn't lose, and I was right. Now, I must admit, I haven't exposed them to inclimate weather yet, but they have worked fine for me. They have been on for almost two months and they work #$*& good for 45.00. My only complaint is that the bags don't hold their shape. They collapse in the middle. It's not a big problem, but the aesthetics suffer. I will re-inforce the sides when it gets to be a real problem, but until then I'm happy.

Those $45.99 bags are $64.94 with shipping. Just something to think about if they don't last.

I completely missed this post when it first went around. By coincidence, I bought a motyorcycle jacket this past summer at a flea market - You guessed it - Genuine Buffalo Leather, and the price was $35. The construction of the jacket and the bags pictured looks exactly the same, with the exact Diamond Plateâ„¢ Roman Rockâ„¢ Design and I'm convinced it originates from the same source. I agree with Grump in that have no doubt that the price is worth it - even if it only lasts for a short duration. I WILL say the term BUFFALO is a bit deceiving - As far as BUFFALO is concerned, it may be buffalo, but i'll bet it ain't BISON. The Genuine BUFFALO leather clothing line is PURE 'MADE in CHINA'. Bill Cody didn't hunt this hide down, I'm sure. The quality of the jacket I bought is NOT to my definition of quality, however, for tossing around on a motorcycle and getting bug stained, wet and abused, $35 wasn't much of a gamble. Anyway, just thought that I'd confirm the stuff is probably a good gamble for the price, and remind you all that you do get what you pay for. In this case you won't be paying for either quality - or - Genuine buffalo as we know it. Peace, out Dawgs

Buffalo leather means WATER BUFFALO from asia. Saying that, I have a fairly nice leather jacket that is "buffalo" and I dig it. But then I did buy it soley to keep my skin on me and not on the road.

I found a 7 piece set of luggage on eBay for $45.99Those sets are all over e-bay. It appears that the guy is getting rid of them for somewhere in the $65 to $75 range (sometimes a bit more), and plays with the opening bid/shipping charges to make it come out within that range. I've seen 'em with an opening bid of $0.99 and shipping of $64.99, opening bid of $24.99 with shipping of $58.00, all the way up to an opening bid of $49.99 with shipping only $13. If you want a set, find the auction with the lowest combined opening/shipping amount and just bit that much. If you don't get it, it means some other poor sucker just paid more than needed, and it wasn't you! Just keep trying in that case, there are plenty of them out there. PS: Best price I've seen so far was right around $60 with shipping, which really isn't too bad.. But I've always maintained that you get what you pay for, and cheap bags are just that, cheap bags. If anyone picks up a set of these, it would be nice to hear about them from first hand experience. Cheers, Brad
