my America seems to have developed a clunking noise that occurs under a load in first gear....seems to be coming from the left side.....any clues before I take off the primary side cover?

If its the standard little "chunk" that occurs when you shift into first....thats common. It can be mitigated a bit by rolling the bike forward and back just a tad then "touch" it down to first gear.

I am getting a new Thunderbird Sport Cush Drive rubber soon and I hope that that cleans up the overall final drive slop a bit.

The only thing I could think of is a spring come loose from the clutch housing bearing. Or maybe a bearing.

Drop the engine oil first before undoing the cover

it is a clunk (or series of clunks) that occurs with the clutch engaged and under a load (taking off) in first gear.....

check your chain...mine used to "clunk" under a couple of different circumstances...first when rolling slowly and clutch was pulled in...and when leaving the line in first...

Both of these went away when I relubed AND adjusted the chain...it was WAY loose...

my chain is definately bad.....loose with a tight spot, so it cannot be properly adjusted...sure hope the noise is coming from it, but it sounds like the primary side....
