Gonna start putting the freak in tonight. Any hints or tips from those with experience?
Also, the directions that came with the kit from Brent have photos which are a bit blurry. Are there any other sets of directions posted anywhere?
Thanks.

Mike,
Piece of cake if you have a jack. I to found the instructions from Brent blurry, but I meddled through just by reading the instructions.
The only problem I ran into was the crank case vent tube it is just not long enough to mount it according to the instructions.
So I routed it and mounted it under the seat.
The whole air box will slide right out the back. drop the shocks so the rear wheel drops down when you jack the bike up and remove the fender then the air box will slide out as one piece.

I had the same Problem with the crank case vent tube & the blurry pics. I wonder if it's possible for Brent to put the photos online so people can download their own Hey Big Poppy what's with the Ausie flag?

OK. First snag: Trying to get the battery box out. The directions say remove the two screws holding it to the frame and pull until you can get at the ignition from behind. Couldn't do it, so I undid the thrird screw that seems to be holding it to the frame. (directions wrong?) Still can't get it out. Hmmm. Back at it.

I had the same problem but once I removed third screw which also holds rear brake line in place the battery could be tilted forward & removed . minor glitch in the instructions

Thanks Tommy and Phil. That bolt by the brake line was it! Love this website.
In the process I seem to have snapped a rubberband-like thing with a little rubber mushroom on it. Any ideas what this is?
Thanks again.

Phil in those instructions it said: "Next it says go ahead and install the plastic toolbox. Well.... There ain’t no way it’s going in there and it’s not because of where I mounted the breather. It will not get beyond the sprocket cover and the rear of the Freak. I will find something else". I'm planning on doing the freak in a few months so is this still a problem?? Anyone

There were others who did not have this problem with the initial Freaks. I also believe the 'modern Freak' does not have this problem. I put the toolbox in a fork bag. Problem solved! Check it out:

I fitted the freak kit a few months back..the only problem was the same as mentioned earlier..the crankcase breather pipe didn't reach where it was supposed to, so i mounted it using one of the bolts in the front sprocket cover..theres a pic in my gallery. Everything else was pretty much straight forward..

So all the Freaks from Brent come with 160s?
If they are too big (seems to be a consensus around here), why aren't they coming with smaller jets?
I would expect Brent to to an even jet swap also!

CT, the instructions are on Brent's site..... Click Here The color pictures are a little better quality than the printed ones I received with the kit.

You guys could try asking Brent for different jets when ordering. Not sure if he would do the swap, but worth a try asking.

That's what I've done. My Freak is still backordered, but he didn't say he wouldn't, so I guess I'll find out when I get it.

Thanks for all your help. Freak is installed and now it is time to tune it up. One more question: I notice that the freak leaves the left pod covered by plastic while the right pod is only covered by the cheese grater. Big Poopy suggested drilling the plastic so they both get more or less equal air. Any other ideas?
Thanks.

Check for your speedo cable/brake line loop on the front fender- left rear side. They are a common break. Many threads on alternatives and repair.

Thanks cowboy, but that's not it (though mine is broken.) This looks like a litle household rubberband.

Lemme suggest this, do not even use the stoopid crankcase thingamabob. Just take a piece of hose that will connect to the crankcase vent on the side cover then route it and zip tie it so that it pukes onto your chain. The breather/filters are a PITA and need constant emptying and cleaning. And if they get full, they blow oil all over your motor in the hard to clean places to boot. So the EPA may stop you and give ya a sermon, but the heck with them, I'm a rebel.

Thanks Pat. As long as I have your attention . .. The freak leaves the left pod covered by plastic while the right pod is only covered by the cheese grater. Big Popy suggested drilling the plastic so they both get more or less equal air. Any thoughts about this? Also, a little rubber-band like thing with a mushroom head fell out of my bike while I was pulling the battery box. Any idea what it is? Many thanks

I cut my left side cover and drilled holes in it to so it is more open for air intake, a good idea.
Shrooms? I haven't done them since the 80s though. Not sure what you mean, post a picture.

The shroom thing is probably that little cap that goes on the hole in the spine of the bike. Needs to come out anyway... I cut the mounting tabs out of my left side cover and used them to mount the cheese grater. Then last year I just made my own mounting tabs out of aluminum. Breathes plenty freely now. Shoulda asked me yesterday!

I dremel'd out everything behind the cheese grate. If you leave the front edge intact, you can trim off about everything else and still have some rigidity to the plastic. Once the cover is on, you can only see the part above the battery.

Beings I'm probably the board's "poster child" for sloth & indolent motorbike upkeep, I decided to take the sidecovers off following this morning's spin. I just did this last year, or was it the year before?
Yep, the right side filter was barely hanging on for dear life, right & left are both pretty much filthy dirty. Fortunately there's a K/N recharge kit in the garage. Spray the cleaner stuff on, wait the required time. Hose off 1/2 lb of grime. Let 'em dry in the 100dF sunshine. Take out the handy-dandy cordless and drill a bunch of holes in the left side plastic thingy. .
Hey, I've been busy .
