Dear friends,

Please allow me to start by saying a few words in Greek:
Democracy, Politics, Mathematics, Theatre and Tragedy.
...

DEMOCRACY + POLITICS.
Blah blah blah and blah blah blah, furthermore blah blah blah blah blah blah blah.
Following which blah blah and blah blah blah, notwithstanding blah blah blah blah bla bla blah.
Blah blah blah and blah blah blah blah blah and blah blah blah blah blah blah.
Blah blah blah and blah blah blah blah blah and blah blah blah.Blah blah blah and blah blah blah blah blah and blah blah blah blah blah blah.
Blah blah blah and blah blah blah.
Consequently, blah blah blah and blah blah blah blah blah and blah blah blah

MATHEMATICS.
Blah blah blah and blah blah blah, additionally blah blah blah blah blah blah blah.
Blah blah blah and blah blah blah blah blah and blah blah blah.
Blah blah blah and blah blah blah.
Blah blah blah and blah blah blah. Blah blah blah and blah blah blah blah blah and blah blah blah blah blah blah.
Therefore, we have blah blah blah and blah blah blah blah blah and blah blah blah.

THEATRE.
Blah blah blah and blah blah bla whilst blah blah blah blah bla bla blah.
Blah blah blah and blah blah blah during which time blah blah and blah blah blah
Socially speaking, it was blah blah blah and blah blah blah blah blah and blah blah blah.
Not surprisingly, blah blah blah and blah blah blah blah blah and blah blah blah.

TRAGEDY.
Throughout the years I had always hoped to commence my riding expeditions earlier in the spring, rather than later.
This year I was fortunate in as much as the touring started in the latter part of April and into May (13 days) and then continued a further 8 days in the latter part of May ... a total of 3 weeks (and 2000 pictures taken).

A good start, I thought!

I had planned on continuing this good practice the weekend before last (i.e. 9/10 June) whereby I was hoping to fit in two 8-9 day rides within the month of June followed by another 10 days in the beginning of July.
This would bring me up to the end of July and the 10 country expedition, to and from the Euro Rally to be held in Sweden this year.
Alas, but as Mr Murphy's legislation (Murphy's Law) would have it, I have had to postpone these trips for 3 weeks (another one to go, at the time of this writing).
It is my hope that I have not placed too much of a burden on you, my friends and extended family, but I just had to put forward for your consideration, this what I consider constitutes ... A GREEK TRAGEDY!

I would also hope that I will be forgiven for what appears to be my feeble attempt to conceal my woes and disappointment, within what would initially seem to be a thread covering classically derived concepts.

One the positive side you are still going to be able to do some of your riding expeditions.

Unfortunatley, I have had to cancel any multi-day riding adventures this summer for one reason or another.

Ah, but to illustrate the concept of karmic balance - or perhaps you'd prefer nemesis - I was fortunate enough to enjoy an unexpected long ride yesterday! A last-minute business meeting meant I had to get from Cleveland to Pittburgh, a 2 and 1/2 hour distance. The weather was in the 70s, the sun was out, and Route 30 has twists, turns, and hills. So what's a guy to do?

Needless to say I spent almost 6 hours in the saddle (I had to go there AND back!), which may have resulted in a slightly numb botty but well worth the adventure. And to top it off, my company pays 40 cents per mile for travel, which means if I don't use the cage, I win!!

Sorry to hear of your tragedy, but thank you for offering the karmic balance

Bedouin, what do you do for a living that allows you to take so much time off for traveling? In law enforcement it's coverage 24/7 and we rarely get to use more than two weeks vacation at a time(I have 4 months worth of vacation time saved up).......ANGELIS

So you've already done 3 weeks worth of trips, and had to postpone some others? And I who have only done a 5 day trip to Prescott in May are supposed to feel sorry for you? Heck, I'm envious!

You've done a FIVE DAY tour Derek, join the ranks of the Überpriviledged along with Thanassis and Paris Hilton then!! I'm LUCKY, DARN LUCKY, to make a 45 minute commute through bumber to bumper New York-bound traffic just to enjoy my bike. Spoiled brats!!!!

Well I wouldn't call a 275 mile ride to Prescott a "tour", but riding with a great bunch of forum members made up for the brevity of the ride there.

But it just goes to show you(Roseanne Rosanadanna), there's always somebody who has less. I'm sure the next person we'll hear from is somebody like Friar John, who just got his bike back together and hadn't ridden at all this year.

It all depends upon perspective. Is it half full or half empty. Any day out on the bonnie is a good day.

Strictly half-empty AL, as I was putting on about 12,000 a year before this year, and am now under 500 probably!!! Definitely EMPTY!

Well when you live out in the big wide open west, 275 miles is a short trip. Back east that puts you through 4 or 5 states.

AL, i take that partially back. Worked late last night and got to take nice summers eve ride home, kind of reminded me why I bought a bike in the first place. No traffic, the night air, the headlight glistening off of my front rim and spokes, THANKFULLY no critters!!, and just me and my Speedo leading the way home.... My glass is a tad fuller now.

Two hundred and 75 is small, when some SWTF participants rode 575 miles, or rode/drove 1100 miles for fun, friendship, and SalMaglie's (and Mrs. SalMaglie's) home cookin'. Sometimes, i can still taste it; like Martha says, "And that's a good thing..."

Okay, Thanassis! With all the blah-blah-blahs in this rather cryptic little whine of yours here, I have absolutely no idea why all of your grandiose dreams of a long summer getaway astride your Triumph have suddenly appeared to have vanished as does a North African Sirocco which occassionaly wafts over your Balkan Peninsula, only to be gone in a moment's notice.

In other words..."this is all greek to me", Dude!!!

What happened???

Greg, Ah, I'm glad you know what I was refering to. Unfortunately over here in central CA, the temps are about to stay in the 100's for the next two months, and my body can't handle the heat. So my glass is about to sit more on the empty side. Bummer.

Peter,

This is the planned route to/from the BA.COM Euro Rally in Bankeryd, Sweden.

To ...
Athens -> Sofia/Bulgaria(1) -> Bucharest/Romania(2) -> Budapest/Hungary(3) -> Bratislava/Slovakia(4)
-> Vienna/Austria(5)-> Prague/Czech Republic(6)-> Gdansk (actually Gdynia)/Poland(7)
for ferry across to Karlskrona/Sweden(8) and up to Bankeryd.

From ...
Bankeryd -> Gothenburg -> Copenhagen/Denmark(9) -> Ferry across to Germany(10)
(probably Rostock ... I haven't worked that one out yet) -> Innsbruck/Austria -> Rome/Italy(11)
-> ferry from Brindisi/Italy to Patras/Greece and Athens.

I have just realized that's actually 11 countries to be ploughed through and not 10, as I originally thought
(excluding Greece, of course).

That's the route done, now I have to plan the dates.

Thanassis, looks like a pretty cool route and I wish I could be doing it as well! Will you be sticking to the Autobahns/Autostrada/National Autoroutes, or secondary roads? I know on the leg from Berlin to Munich, you can cut through the Thüringer Wald (Forest) between Eisenach and Coburg, and then shoot down through Nürnberg to Munich. Nice windy roads, and small villages. Make sure to stop for a Thüringer Bratwurst. Giant cousin of the Nürnberger. In fact, depending on the time of day, there's a guy I always go to for lunch in the Lutherplatz in Eisenach, can't miss his cart in the middle of the square. OH, and if you go through Munich, stop and have a latte macchiato or Espresso at the Café Luigi Tambosi on the Odeonsplatz (right in front of the Hall of Generals) You won't miss that either, since all the people watchers (and there are some "nice" people to watch since the University is right up Leopoldstrasse!!) are there if it's sunny. IF I were going and had the time, I'd swing over through Bern, and then down south of Lakes Brienz and Thun into the Berner Oberland! Talk about a view as you come south of Lake Thun and see the Alps rise up above you...

Hmmmm, if I tie floats to my bike and paddle really hard....

Bengt,

The roads on the way up through the eastern European countries are not very good (an understatement) so I will be taking it very easy (another understatement) this time.
Besides, I am riding 2-up on this one so I am not looking to push my luck (it's not myself I am thinking of here, you already know me ).
I look forward to seeing you in a few weeks.

Greg,
Thanks for the tips. You have just planted some ideas into my head. I think I'll mix in some secondary roads and Thüringer Wald is a perfect choice.
I once stayed at an inn just south of Eisenach owned by a major wine producer. In fact the inn was right next to the facility.
We were given the opportunity to taste all their wines ... which is probably why I can't remember the name of the producer.
If we do go this way, I'll also look out for the Thüringer Bratwurst vendor in Lutherplatz in Eisenach ... and give him your regards.

If Odeonsplatz is also called the Marinerplatz (sp?), then I know the establishment you mention ... and you are right about the ... settings.
Thanks again for the "food for thought".

Thanassis, don't confuse Marienplatz with the Odeonplatz. Marienplatz is where the Glockenspiel is and the Neues Rathaus. Odenplatz is a half-circle plaza at the end of Ludwigstrasse, which runs right through the University, and ends at the Feldherrenhalle (Hall of Generals, where Hitler staged his Putsch, and members of the Freikorps set up machine gun nests to fight the Army and Police). It's also right next to the Hofgarten (also very nice), so shouldn't be hard to find. Oh, it's also directly opposite the Theatiner Church, a large mustard-yellow church with black domes!! Very striking! If you need directions, call me, I can walk you through it, been to Munich more times than I care to remember, actually, no, I like remembering them all!!

If you want, do a Google search of Odeonsplatz or Cafe Tombosi...
Map of Odeonsplatz (Cafe Tombosi)

Bill,

In the region of 35-40 fuel stops.
It's around 8000km's excluding the 3 ferry rides (roughly 1000km's, 10 hours + 2-3 hours + 12 hours respectively) and also excluding local deviations/rides.

Ok Greg, on which "strasse" in Munich do you live eh? I'm not believing this CT tale you have been telling us.

I would be very happy to live on ANY Strasse in Munich, but c'est la vie! No, been there many times (but never too many), and this is kind of a landmark for me, for meeting old friends from Munich, and just a cool place to hang out and people watch. Even took a rather white knuckle ride on a 1974 Guzzi 500cc single cylinder Italian Army surplus motorcycle on Ludwigstrasse, on FRIDAY night!(and yes, it had semi-knobby tires which work WONDERFULLY on cobblestone-NOT!!!!) Certainly the one of the biggest adrenaline rushes ever!(and believe it or not, it got me even more looks than my America, maybe partly because it was painted in Italian Army colors, and maybe partly because I stalled it at a major intersection with a crowd of lovelies looking on, and took 5 minutes to figure out how to work the decompression lever/kick start setup (and backwards brakes and heel-toe shifter!!!) Aye yay yay!! Ho quasi merda io stesso!(hopefully that translates from Italian OK, the Greek letters don't work here!)

Angelis,
A complicated description, let's just say that I am able to control/manipulate my time off to suit my touring needs.

I think Bedouin is a Greek shipping magnate.

This is the planned route to/from the BA.COM Euro Rally in Bankeryd, Sweden.

To ...
Athens -> Sofia/Bulgaria(1) -> Bucharest/Romania(2) -> Budapest/Hungary(3) -> Bratislava/Slovakia(4)
-> Vienna/Austria(5)-> Prague/Czech Republic(6)-> Gdansk (actually Gdynia)/Poland(7)
for ferry across to Karlskrona/Sweden(8) and up to Bankeryd.

From ...
Bankeryd -> Gothenburg -> Copenhagen/Denmark(9) -> Ferry across to Germany(10)
(probably Rostock ... I haven't worked that one out yet) -> Innsbruck/Austria -> Rome/Italy(11)
-> ferry from Brindisi/Italy to Patras/Greece and Athens.

Wonderful Thanassis - how far is that do you think?

Bill,

I ran the route on the new Autoroute 2007 software (I believe it's called Streets and Trips on your side of the pond) I bought yesterday and it works out to be roughly 7660 km's (i.e. 340 km's less than I mentioned on my previous post).

Peter,

Yes, as with last year's BA.COM Euro Rally I hope to do a write-up with pictures on my return.
I'll just add it to "The Bedouin's Run" series (which is what I called last year's disaster).
Now, how long it will take ... I don't know.
