I just bought the new oil from Autozone for cycles, some others have tried it, I haven't put it in yet, they also look up a classic style Bonneville with a 790 cc engine and shows a STP SMO17 filter fits, $5.99 I bought that too, but haven't installed it yet either. Double check the numbers and do at your own risk, because, like I said, it doesn't quote for SM or BA, just classic style Bonneville. Good luck, also if anyone knows a reason to NOT use these, let us know. jeff

I've been using the Mobil 1 V-twin oil from Autozone. I'm not a fan of STP oil filters and would spend a few bucks more for a better filter. If you have already installed the STP, don't sweat it, one oil cycle won't do any harm. (they're not built real well and haven't fared well in oil analysis studies). Autozone also carries the full line of Bosch oil filters. The 3300 fits our bikes and is a much better choice to compliment the synthetic oil we're using.

Valvoline has a brand new oil specifically for 4 stroke wet clutch motorcycles. Its says so on the bottle, about $4/qt. PureOne PL14612 oil filter. Other filters: Napa Gold 1358/1365 K&N KN-191 Wix 51358 Bosch 3300 ST 6607 Baldwin B1400

Royal, what store carries the Emgo filter? Is there anything to be said for allways using genuine Triumph parts? Other than they are too expensive.

I have been getting mine from Brent, no complaints with the oil or filter. The price might be higher than some, but much less than Triumph. Brent also includes a new oil plug washer. All for less than 50.00. Triumph was charging me that much just for the oil.

OIL? What's this? A new day? I use Shell Rotella-T Synthetic 5W-40. About $13/4L jug at WalMart. SHELL ROTELLA-T SYNTHETIC 5W-40 SPECS I would encourage all to read from the next link "All About Oil", and also has some good information about oil filters, and many other similar topics. I have not run across any contradictory information from anyone on this site. Most of what I have read here on BA.COM he has supported with his own research. I learned a lot, and found the Synthetic Oil story fascinating. Did we really know that Mobil 1 was no longer a true synthetic oil? I did a google search on the JASO-MA requirement, and stumbled upon this. Great stuff. ALL ABOUT OIL Scroll on down, folks. It's worth the read. I don't think I'll encounter anything on this planet that his recommended oils can't protect against. The Purolator Pure One oil filter seems to have the high honors. I copied a list from a similar post here last year, and Dinqua nailed it. Add the Mobil 1 #M1-108. I did write down a different WIX # 85365 - maybe somebody else can sort that out. Filters come in 2.5", and 3.25" lengths, so we have a lot of flexibility out there. Some of the 3.25" filters are: Purolator Pure One PL14610 Mobil M1-110 Bosch 3323 Walmart SuperTech ST7317 (made by Purolator?) I carry a list around in my wallet as I can't be sure what I'll find when I need one. As well as we all want to take care of our bikes, do we use the same stuff / criteria in our four-wheelers? I use Valvoline 30W in my p/up.

keith,
how do you like the rotella t synthetic? shifts?
i use it in my voyager but it is water cooled.
i've used the mobil 1 v twin syn and currently use amsoil 20/50. i like the shifting better w/ the amsoil, but am thinking of the rotella for the speedy too.
great site btw. i ran across it a few weeks ago.
i'm going to switch to the 3.25 pure 1 from the napa gold. looks like superior filter area.
thanks,

My shifts are fine. The Rotella actually comes in a 3.75L jug. Use it all. The level is dead on in the sight glass.
I really believe the Rotella-T 15W-40 would be more than adequate in our engines as well, though not synthetic. What does "synthetic" mean anymore anyway, right?
These oils are so "over-engineered" for the commercial duty applications that using them in our engines, and changing the oil as often as we will - its a walk in the park. I'm not concerned about the viscocity - extreme heat is what this stuff is primarily engineered to withstand. Where I live, I'm certainly not concerned with the cold starts. It is not a matter of $$$$ - I just don't like being backed into a corner (by Triumph), and told that I can only use one thing, and I can only get it one place, at their price.
I really hope more of you read that whole ST1300 write up. I'm not touting (or knocking) Honda, and I don't own stock in Shell. The article was very informative, and I appreciate anyone who would take the time to put that much effort into something and then share it with the rest of us for free. I learned a lot about oil, and oil development reading this, and I've been in the auto service industry half my life. I have shared this info with others I work with, and all agree it is quite informative/interesting.
This topic keeps popping up on this site, and I'm sure it will again before the week is over. That's okay. At least we are not all a bunch of lemmings running down to the Triumph store to pay their price for their oil. We have choices. (This is AMERICA)

Pat, The Valvoline is the stuff...I payed 3.40 a quart. Any NAPA store can get it for you in a couple hours. At least that's what the guys at two different NAPA dealers told me. Probably depends on how close you are to a local wharehouse. I used this and the Lucas Oil treatment and the gearbox is very happy. Cost me $25.00 plus a bit of a mess to change my oil compared to the 70.00 at a dealer. (including the Lucas) The only trouble doing my own oil is the placement of the drain plug. If you put it up on the lift, there's no way to collect the old stuff. Course, now that I've got my driveway gunked up...the solution is a block under the kickstand and a shallow plastic pan. Available for 4.00 at NAPA. SOME of this stuff I figure out on my own. BB

joker, Yea, it takes four quarts. Be sure to fill the new oil filter first before installing it.

Yeah Royal. Give us the info on the oil filter. Right now my only option is to hop over to Detroit and get filters from Autozone.

Keith, As far as I know the only syn oil out there that is 100% syn is Amsoil. Mobil 1 isn't, Motul isn't. Technically any oil can call itself synthetic as long as 51% or more of what is in the bottle is syn oil. If it is less than 51% then it is generally called a semi-syn or a syn blended oil. There are very big differences between a syn oil and petroleum bases oil. There are some big differences between a lot of the syn oils out there. Some of that due to the % of syn oil in the bottle. If you go to the following link and scroll down you will see how much 12 different syn oils vary. http://www.amsoil.com/StoreFront/mcv.aspxTom

I went down to Shucks (like an AutoZone) and got a Bosch filter ($6) and the new Valvoline 4 stroke MC oil ($3.12 per quart). No problems. I have found that if you put the full amount of oil in that the manual shows for a change, you'll over fill the crank case, so be careful with that. On mine I put in 3 quarts and 22 ounces at an oil change. This includes the amount to fill the filter before installing it. After I run the bike and let it sit over night the oil level is then right at the upper limit mark at the sight glass.

The new Valvoline 4 stroke MC oil at $12.72 for 4 quarts at Autozone and a Triumph (emgo i think) filter. I will be using a Purolator filter in the future (about half price of Triumph). I have used the Valvoline oils since the late seventies when my Volvo mechanic demanded it. As soon as I put it in my America, I noticed a difference in clutch operation and shifting. Amsoil's good but not worth the price in comparison. I can change oil and filter at 3,000 miles three times for what one Amsoil change would cost. Ride Safe, Dennis

SKILLET,
I bought that new Valvoline oil at G.I. Joe's on Saturday for 2.99 per qt.
I changed the oil & filter that day, along with new spark-plugs (NGK Iridium X plugs). Last evening (Sunday) I took a 60 miles ride after dinner & I was impressed. My machine never sounded or felt better. And the clutch worked perfectly.

Hey BT, I like it too. I just wish I could be riding some of those West Coast roads with you. We don't have a G.I. Joe's here, but I only pay 80 cents/gallon more than you. Ride Safe, Dennis
