Folks:
I have a Homelite brand grass string trimmer. I've disdovered the gas tank has a tiny split. Home Depot, the manufacturer no longer sells replacement tanks. Is there a way to repair the split? The trimmer is in good shape other than the crack, I hate to trash it, wasting good bike mod dollars on useless junk...

IF I drained the tank, filled it with water, could I use a soldering iron to seal over the crack or is that foolishness? JB Weld, SuperGlue???

Help me save my dollars for important things!

Plastic gas tank? See if you can find someone that welds plastic.

It's just a trimmer sold by home depot, somebody else made it- somebody has to have parts for it.

You could try JB weld. Im pretty sure the gas wont effect it at all.

You might be able to fix it with a soldering gun. I don't think it would implode or explode with water in it.

This may help http://hcpi.arinet.com/scripts/EmpartISAPI.dll?MF

Thank for the tips, but the link didn't work. I'll give it a shot.

Hey Al, go to the auto parts store (or check your toolbox) and look for fuel proof gasket sealer and cover the crack with it. Maybe clean the crack up and drill it out so the sealer will fill it. Or do a google search. There are tons of places that sell small engine parts/accessories. There's a guy parting out a Homelite string trimmer on eBay.

Al, I'm surprised you can't get a replacement.
I just ordered a part for my Homelite. What's the model #?

I don't know what model you have, but you can find all kinds of crap online. Like this one:

Every town has a guy that fixes mowers and stuff out of his garage and always has a yard full of junk and parts... look in the classifieds, find this guy and I'll bet he will have one that he'll part with for a couple bucks

It's a ZR series, z625cdv. I can bring up a parts schematic, but the tank is no longer available.

You guys are the best - the ebay tank will work, worth a $10 or so gamble! I'll keep you posted.

Figures. I've raped this forum for information for a year now, and the one time I finally get to give back it has nothing to do with motorcycles.

Sheesh.

Auto parts stores sell a 2 part gas tank leak stopper. It's like 2 pieces of clay you mix together. Don't know if it will work on plastic, though.

Most of those are metal only. I had something I used to use to fix the plastic fuel bladders on my boat. I can't remember the name. I'm sure it will come to me.

Well, found the product pretty quick, on a motorcycle site!
SealAll Glue

BUT, took the tank off this evening and found there is no crack anywhere. I think the fuel mix is leaking out at where the new fuel lines go into the tank. They are only friction fit and apparently, the new lines I put in are slightly smaller in diameter than the hole.(the old ones were leaking here, so I replaced them two weeks ago)

I have some RTV, can I use that on the lines to seal up the gap or is the SealAll necessary?
