Given my recent "incident" with the stock Chrome guard, any of you fellers willing to post pics or descriptions on how you have beefed up your stock guard? Thanks,

Man , seems as though the frequency of failure and the potential liability would warrant a recall and re - engineering of the part . How would one go about contacting Triumph ?

After 2 years and almost 9K miles, my stock one is ok after checking. What is it that could be stressing the rear mount so much to cause all these failures?

I'm wondering the same thing. I have a new, black guard I want to get chromed this winter, but don't want to experience another break.
Someone on the DC RATS list just posted a contact for a Pete Carleo at Triumph HQ in the states. They say he was very helpfully sorting out service issues. He might be a good guy to send comments on this issue. I have a phone number only:
"peter carleo is the guy at triumph HQ in the states that deals with customer service. his phone number is 678/854.2010. he was a great help to me when my bike was at clinton. he helped me sort through their ******"

Have any of these incidents been related to lowered shocks? I was wondering about any issues with clearance caused by lowering.

re: lowered shocks. i don't think so but i'll look. the swingarm and guard move as one. could the front/right of the fender be hitting the chain guard?

I've been watching my stock black one since I've seen the first post. It's hard for me to imagine it breaking, but it's also located where you can't see what's going on.

Besides lowered shocks, the only other thing that comes to mind are large saddlebags that could exert pressure on the attachment point. If a large number of these failures had neither large bags or lowered shocks, there should be some identifyable cause stressing the fitting.

I left a voice message with Pete Carleo today, we'll see how he responds.
Had one person respond over on TriumphRat.net, he had two failures.
My bike is stock ride height. I have bags, but with support brackets, not sure how that would effect (or is it affect) my chain guard.
I stopped at a PA dealer today and eye-balled the 07's. The mounting tab on the new guard is twice as large. Mentioned my failure and others to the dealer. He shrugged his shoulders and didn't make eye contact.
I'll report back when Mr. Carleo responds.

Hey Ezcue Im sorry to hear about your bad luck, but luckily you were ok. Given the fact that I wouldn't like to go through the experience you unfortunately went through, I thought I might beef up my own chain guard to avoid the same fate? I made up 2 small brackets, one bent at ninety degrees and the other bent to the shape of the guard at the rear mounting hole. Drilled some 4mm holes and used some polished 4mm pan head socket bolts and red loctite.       I really dont think it needed the brackets, there didnt seem to be any stress fractures, but I would rather do this than have it break.The guard was an original black guard that I got plated myself. Not sure if that is relevent or not but it is strange how the factory chrome ones seem to be breaking.

this absolutely should not be necessary!! triumph is dropping the ball on this part; which i belive should be corrected and recalled.

I agree with you 100% and hopefully they will. But in the mean time I will feel a bit better at least.

In the meantime I pulled my stock one off, cleaned and inspected it, and put it back. They sure do get nasty inside. 
We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

I would suggest a chain guard check to be added to the pre-ride checklist. Why not, right?
