Okay, it's not such a big deal, but I love the way the cut came out. The only thing I like more is the way the rear fender came out, but you'll have to wait to see that. The white edge is the natural color of the plastic. I wanted to reveal a bunch of that big 120 tire in the front, and taper the rear a little more gracefully with a longer tail. I have a couple more angles in my gallery. Both fenders should get primer on them this weekend so I can start sanding them for paint. As far as the rest of the bike goes, I'm waiting on one more valve shim (Monday) and the bike will be back on the road again.

Even though it looks kinda like a beanie, I really like the shape. Can't wait to see it painted! btw, you are gonna get wet, wet, wet!! I had a speedie fender on for awhile. I cannot believe how much more water was thrown up!

Nicely done. Can you give a short bit on how you made the cut to the front fender? I have a fender with a 3" crack on the trailing edge. A clean trim would make it useable.

Very clean. Any hint on the new color? That bobbed fender would look very sharp with a traditional pinstripe accent (ala Von Dutch).

This fender was a similar deal. I got the front fender from a member here for free because he tried to install a mudflap and it cracked on him. I chopped the rear edge just above those holes, since it cracked towards the back end.
For both fenders I used an old flexible ruler I had from my old architecture school days (haven't used it in probably 20 years). I was able to use it to get a nice clean consistent line. Then I used a mini cut off wheel to rough cut them. Problem is it more melted the front fender than anything else, but it got the job done. Then I hand-sanded the edge with 180 on a block until I got it right up to the edge of the line I had marked. I also remeasured from a center line to make sure the two sides were consistent, as well as measuring the distance from the mounting holes to the edge. On the rear fender I used a grinder to trim the rough cut down and a bench grinder with an expander wheel to fine-tune it.

Let's just say it's on the same side of the color wheel as what you see now.

Absolutely. You have no idea how often I've considered spilling my guts about my complete makeover plan, but the way things have gone this year, I'm not posting about any aspect of the project until it's done.

It all depends on my painter. I thought/hoped we were spraying primer tomorrow, but now he's running off to Missoula to help someone else spray a car. Ah well, beggars can't be choosers. Genius can't be rushed.

When I went to a 120 last summer I had rubbing too. I don't know if you can tell from my pictures, but had to extend the bracket up about an inch, with a 1" by 1/8" thick piece of flat steel strap, and drill new holes. It was a quicky modification before last years Kootenay Raid and still needs finishing. To me this mod was preferable to cutting the center out of the bracket. The front end felt more wobbly when I ran without the bracket.

Looks good, John. Made a similar cut in mine a while back too(well, you know what they say about "great minds", right?! ), but only on the top forward part of the fender. I kind'a thought the same thing as Phil did that cutting down the back part of it might throw a liitle more dirt and grime onto the front of the bike than I wanted. The stock cut always seemed to me to go a little too far forward, and kind'a resembled a Sportster's fender a little too much also.
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

Well, I'm toiling under that impression, yes. But I'm open to correction, as long as it's documented.
