Slow day at work?
"an advanced product of American industrial ingenuity with the kind of lasting appeal that will still be in style 50 years from now."
Little did they know that the Plymouth name would be gone and gas would be hovering above $3/gal.

For some of us I guess... My partner on the counter spends all his spare time at work searching the news.. all day everyday.. he finds some pretty odd stuff. This one intrigued me..

Yeah, they opened the vault yesterday and it is full of water. They're afraid the car is going to be rusted out. The car is supposed to be cleaned up and shown tommorrow at the Tusla Fairgrounds. It's been in the news all week here. Nothing but constant excitement, here in T-town...

Did anyone read what else was in the car? Ten, TEN gallons of gasoline and FIVE quarts of oil. That's what's worth the most these days.

I can say for sure that most all - Not all, but most all, belvederes were indeed family oriented transportation. So, I guess we can discuss this - That is, if anyone wants to discuss this - any further. Wait a minute - shouldn't this have been posted in the 'Really Crappy American Cars of the 50's, 60's, and 70's Forum. Come on Chy - This is a trick isn't it.

Well, If Chy DOES start that kind'a forum around here, Barry, then as I inferred above, NOBODY better put ANY Mopar cars on that list, or "you-know-who" is gonna REALLY bend their ear about it! (RIGHT?! Oh grey-bearded one?)

Ha. Yeah Dwight send her over. Maybe we could bury her in the next time capsule.

Oopsie, looks like the time capsule became an underground aquarium. The unveiling might be a bit less than pleasant

No, it was a PLYMOUTH. not a Shabby, Ford or AMC.
They should have given it to me instead of burying it, I would have taken better care of it.

It's Boyd Coddington, if you really care. I've met the dude twice at car shows. Once when he was a nobody and again after he made his fortune and lost it and made it again. In retrospect, that was two times too many.

Whoa Nelly, just who the he-double hockey sticks do YOU think you are besmirching the FINE reputation of such marques as AMC?!!!!!!!!!! Sir, IF I were a gentleman, I'd pistolwhip you and challenge you to 20 paces at noon!! Why, my 1981 AMC Eagle was among the finest of saloons, once I crawled underneath it and retightened everything that that POS Iron Duke 4 shook loose each week!! Hey, ever notice the similarity in quality between AMC and AMF? Hmmmmmm, similar names, similar fine quality Motor Vehicles...

Yeah, I watched the telecast tonight.. Poor Miss Belvedere didn't fair too well. The vault evidently leaked and it was about half full of water.. but the time capsule came through intact. They made the best of the situation and had a good time with it. They still plan to give away the car... it's kinda rusty though.

a couple items of interest in the "time capsule" in the trunk of the '57 were items of "every-day use" which included a 6-pack of schlitz beer and in the womans purse were supposed to be bobby pins and TRANQUILIZERS..... I guess, pick your poison !

Wow, what a mess. At least you know the car is all original. Are they planning on restoring it? If not it would be waste of a very cool car.

Yep! The patina on this Vigil Exner designed "Forward Look" Plymouth might just be a little bit beyond the point of redemption, huh PES?! My favorite of the "Forward Look" Chryslers of the late '50s....the '58 De Soto. http://storm.tocmp.com/desoto1958.htmWhen G.M. and Ford products of 1958 started gettin a heavy over-styled and overly chrome-laden look, the Chryslers just looked faster even sitting still.

Very cool choice Dwight, although I also like the old Woodies (hey, I grew up and still love the Beach Boys, Jan & Dean, the Ventures, Dick Dale, etc...) But, speaking of old cars, saw what looked to be a PRISTINE example of an old Spyder (yeah, just like your Avatar) going the other way on Route 202 near my house on Saturday. I about locked up the brakes hoping to get a better look (talk about a car that just EXUDES SEX APPEAL!!!!), well not really, but WOW what a car!! Pretty sure by the sounds she made that it wasn't one of those VW kit cars. Well, that and the fact that Bentleys, Ferraris and such fine old classics are not so uncommon in this part of the state, ESPECIALLY on a beautiful sunny summer day!

I am with you Greg. Here is a shot of an even better '57 favorite. Blue is my favorite color (like that is a secret).

Well, most of the Beck(and their derivatives) 550 Spyders are powered by VW engines sitting mid-engine in tubular(no, I'm not talkin' "californian" here dude ) frames. Real aluminum-bodied Porsche 550s are fetching in excess of half a million samolians nowdays, so you probably did see a replica saturday, but these replicas tend to be about as close to the original Porsche in specs as any replica out there today, including Shelby Cobras. However, there are a few cars out there that call themselves 550's that are really nothing more that VW rear-engine pan with what looks kind of like a 550 body over it, but doesn't have the beautiful proportions of a "real" Beck 550 mid-engined Spyder.

Well, in that case Greg, maybe one of your silver...err...platinum-spoon feed neighbors to the north actually owns a real one in that case. Yesterday, as I rode back from that Father's Day shindig that I mentioned earlier, I came through the Palos Verdes area of SoCal. It's a very exclusive, very "high-rent" area of a rocky penninsula that juts out into the Pacific here. As I rode past these mansions that lined the streets, I spotted a very rare italian sportcar made in 1953 called the Siata. It looked just like this...... I pulled over and parked the BA, and never being the "Shy One" ya know, struck up a conversation with the car's owner, a very nice man of about 65 years young, I'd say. He was telling me that he and his wife had just returned from Italy and driving this exact car in the Mille Miglia Rally there.(BTW, this car had a V8 pushrod motor made by Fiat....DON'T START PEOPLE!!!) Talk about havin' some dough, huh?! And Derek...NICE '56!!!

Oh yeah, I've heard of, and seen (once) a Siata. I love the style of some of those late 50s/mid-60's sports cars, like the Spyder, the DB4, the 250GT California(Ferrari), etc.... The curves, OOOOOOOH, the curves....

Thanks for sharing that Chy. I've owned a number of Mopars over the years. They could often be had for a song used. Never did score a 440, but enjoyed the others, especially the slant sixes, 318s, and my last was a '69 Newport Custom with a 383. The car was so large, my two kids used to sleep across the back seat on trips. I wrung every last dram of juice out of her, and she finally ended up in a demolition derby. I didn't attend the event. Perhaps that's a better demise than the junkyard. Hard to say. I hope she won anyway. With one car dealer (Mopar) in this small town, I always had an eye out for a Grandma or Grandpa's New Yorker with 10 or 20,000 miles on it, the 440, and going for around $1,000. Ha ha ha. I guess those days and deals are long behind us now. Then there was the guy who when I mentioned that pristine black '64 Buick Electra 225 that rolled through town every 10 months or so said to me, "You should have told me you were interested in that deuce and a quarter" - [his neighbor's car that in the early '90s had around 12,000 miles on it]- "They [being elderly] gave it to the junkyard guy." Here's another story you might enjoy, The discovery of "King Stutz Tomb" http://coolcatcorp.com/millerauction/MillerAuction.html"Consider the strange story of Alex and Imogene Miller of East Orange, VT. They eked out an existence on a small farm. Alex would scrounge rusty nails from burnt buildings to repair his roof..."
