Its hard to see in the first photos, but the rear mount area is actually wider as well as thicker, if you look at the new in comparison to the original, you will see quite a difference, at least for such a small piece. Look at this pic and then look at the one Moe posted and say it doesnt look improved. I guess only time will tell, but I think this one will last for a long time.

What year range seems to have this issue? Is it more prevalent in Americas or Speedmasters?

And the price of the chain guards has increased dramatically this year...maybe to address the added metal

I removed my chain guard this week, like the look but if it rains I'm sure it will get ugly real quick. I hate riding in the rain... its not fun.

Mine broke when I was in Barcelona a few weeks ago. I pulled it off and rode all the way back without one.

I just happened to catch the title of this older thread. Mine broke at the rear bolt hole about a month ago at about 10,000 miles. I didn't realize it was so common for these to break... I bought a used replacement, but now I'm thinking I may not even put it on.

34 K, and my chrome guard is still holding. ( I do check it occasionally, though.)

I agree the gaurd has an issue but I don't think it's as wide spread as it sounds here sometimes when this comes up. My bike has had a black speedy gaurd since 03 and over 25,000 miles and not a hint of weekness.

I still have my stock one after 5 years and 21K miles. BUT, since hearing of the problems, I check it every time I check my chain.
It appears to be mostly replacement chrome ones that failed.

I've just checked my chrome one and original black one from my 09 model. Neither is like the one pictured above. Both are two piece welded ones and are quite thick metal. Obviously it is the earlier one-piece ones which crack, not the chrome ones currently being sold by Triumph.

My 06 TBA broke on the rear mount just next to the bolt hole almost 2 years ago with over 30kmiles on the bike. Replaced it with one from salvage. Mine is black. I may have been lax in checking it and let the bolt loosen somewhat. This thread reminds me to check the bolts before I head out again.

Yay for digging up old threads. Mine snapped today at the rear mount hole. Bike's done nearly 67000km, and is an '04 with a black guard. Just checked prices for new ones, now I'm heading off to ebay.

Possibly run without one, Matt? Or if ya didn't live so far away I'd send you mine which never had a chance to break.

Just an FYI, since I replaced my chrome chain guard with the thicker mount back in 11/07, it's held up with no issues.

Ha! Had mine off today and didn't even think about it as I applied blue locktite when putting it back on.
noticed a black guard (good one) hanging on off the peg board too. Usually pick em up for 15 bucks or less.

Not around this part of the world you don't, apparently. No used ones to be had for love nor money on fleabay, and the new ones are stupidly priced. I'll just run without one till I find one at the right price, or possibly get a friend to try welding up this one (not holding out a lot of hope for that solution to look any good).
