Driving to work today, a plastic trash bag blew onto my exhaust pipe and made a mess. What is the best way to clean it off, sparing the chrome. I have Mother's chrome polish, but thought some kind of solvent might be better: acetone, mineral spirits, ????? Anyone know?

Acetone will dissolve a simple plastic bag, no doubt, and it won't damage the chrome. If you've baked it on you might have to use some kitchen oven cleaner like Easy Off.
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort. Herm Albright (1876 - 1944)

Gun Scrubber seems to disolve that kind of thing, then clean and polish. Never had that happen...... Hope not to...

I was in the same situation...I used Easy Off and it worked like a charm! Be sure to cover the parts behind so you dont get the Easy Off on other parts.

I had it happen when I was a few hundred miles from home. I used a popsicle stick to get most of it off right away. When I got home I let it completely cool and used a razor blade VERY carefully and that got most of the rest. The dremel buffer pad took care of the rest. Next time I'm using chemicals, screw all that work.
We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

Got it off. Used Easy Off oven cleaner; took 1/2 off and softened the rest. Paint scraper next. Then "Turtle Wax Chrome Polish and Rust Remover". (The "Mother's Chrome Polish" was not course/abrasive enough.)
Thanks all!
