This could take a while but I'll try to be brief. The little lady has caught the bug, and there's nothing wrong with that. She has ridden on the back of bikes, all over the east coast. She has never ridden in the drivers seat.....

I got her registered at the MSF class for the middle of July. Tonight, Tues. the 12th, at 8 oclock, she is leaving to go to Chatanooga Tennessee, and there is nothing I can do to stop her.

She saw a HD sportster on the internet, and went Ga-Ga. A week ago she was like I got aproved for my loan. I said "What loan?" She said, "For that bike that I want." I said, "But you've never even heard it start up, you never even sat on it. You've never even been the person behind the bars. What if you try to ride and hate it?" She said, "It's been my dream forever, and you can either be an a$$hole about it, or support me." I said, "I just don't see the rush."

She is taking and enterprise rent-a-van down to Tennessee, and driving it back with a bike inside, with one of her co-workers. I don't usually self medicate, but I really think there's a zanex in the kitchen with my name on it......

Wendy rides and loves it too. I wouldn't like the sight un seen and no test ride and no fitting to see if she is comfy on it etc....At least when it falls over a few times as she learns it's only a Harley.

I thought the only reason that women ride Sportsters was because they are relegated to those pieces of junk by their husbands who are happily riding something that costs at least twice as much. I'll never forget the day I was in the old Orlando Harley dealer downtown where I was shooting the breeze with the owner. A guy took delivery of his new Sportster, and about 20 minutes returned and announced he didn't want the bike - he was obviously a man of discerning taste who thought he could ride a Harley on the cheap. As I recall, they switched the deal to one of the Softail models - not much of a step up unless you want rearview mirrors just for decoration.

She's short, but the suspensions been dropped. I guess she could tell them to go pound salt if she doesn't like it. Although she would lose a ton of money in gas, time spent, and I would assume that they would charge her a fee. Aparently there was an offer that fell threw on e-bay. She contacted this place privately and begged them to hold the bike until she got all her ducks in order.

I saw that. It doesn't matter, it's futile. I don't know the route, don't know the dealership it's at, and I don't have the patience to explain to her that my New Online Friend, (no offense) is coming to help her out.

Worst case, it's worth more in NJ than in KY and you can probably get your money back selling it there if she doesn't like it.

I don't know, reminds me a a guy I knew in 1976. Didn't own a car, had never driven a bike, but got the "bug" real ba-ad. Your basic bum, but he did have a job lined up. He did some research, passed on popular HD's, CB's of the day, but found a brand new (cardinal red) Bonneville T-140 to his liking, arranged some financing. Somehow between the choke, Amal ticklers, clutch and kick starter managed to get the d**n thing running. Everything turned out just fine.............

Just get her going easy-as-it- goes and gently remind her that helmets and proper personal gear are allowed on v-twins. I do know a smallish lady in her late 50's who recently (3 years ago) got a HD 1200. Sometimes the mass is a little much in parking lots and driveways, but she does better than OK on the road and rides within the "comfort zone". Sorry I couldn't be of more help

Wish I could remember how that Bonneville legally got home from the dealer

jh

You just have to accept it at this point (dont'cha think?). Teach her proper riding technique and safety rules. You can't control her but you CAN mentor her.
My fiancee' is going through the same thing. I'm being as proactive as I can as far as guiding her towards a suitable beginner bike and passing on safe riding techniques. Also I'm doing what I can to ensure she knows that every cager out there will be actively trying to run her over. If she doesn't like being behind the bars, fine. If she does, then I have a new riding partner (AND I can put the gunfighter seat back on my speedy )

I feel the same way, we are engaged also. I would love to burn up some asphalt with her by myside. Things just never seem to work out for me that way.......I don't want it rubbing off on her.

Wendys America is her first bike and this is her 2nd season she went through the MSF and passed 100% and now we do burn up the asphalt together! It's a great feeling riding with the one you love. I no longer ride without her if she doesn't go neither do I,excluding errands. Could be a blessing in disguise just hope she didn't jump the gun on the specific bike she chose.

OK, Kevin, I'm going to have to disagree with ya here. Just HOW patient were you when it was about time to pick up your Speedy? I know when after I the bug and put in for the loan, I was seriously considering breaking into the dealer and doing the PDI myself, cause I really couldn't stand waiting around for the loan (it took a whole 15 minutes to wait for the approval!!!GEEZ!!!), and for the dealer to prep the bike!!! Time could not have moved ANY slower during that 4 days!

At least she is pro motorcycle.
I have to admit this kind of happened in our house albeit with the roles reversed. I did the research and bought the wife her bike. She had never seen it or ridden it. She loves that bike now.
And I found out about the speedy on the internet and totally fell in love without seeing one and without riding it.
I was probably more obnoxious about it than most. I just had to have it.

Have her take the MSF and support her wanting to ride. Its fun but a little nerve wracking to ride with your wife.

Im sorry...I dont see the issue here.
Your lady is excited about riding. She is buying her own bike and going to get it. If its a basket case well then she sounds like the type that will learn to work on it.

I have read many posts about guys trying to get their ladies to accept them riding a bike. Your obviously has.

Mine did too...she instigated the MSF course. I had to buy the bikes (with much push back) but shes happy to have it now and WE love it!

Dude...enjoy the couple days alone, treat her right and have fun.

Dont sweat that its an HD. Its her expressing her individuality.

Once she's ridden enough to appreciate what a POS a snortster really is compared to the Triumph, will you be gracious enough to let her upgrade without saying "I told you so."

We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Remember the excitement of getting your first bike? A first bike is a very important motorcycle.

Plus, she's making a Thelma and Louise adventure of it (except I'm sure Ryan is much more handsome than Brad Pitt and she can't wait to come home to her loving man, and I'm hoping there will be no shooting or explosions involved). Pretty cool woman, I'd say.

Hmmm, a '97? Before they started the rubber engine mounts, going to be a shaker. You never know though, it may make it seem more of a traditional bike to her. It would pay to teach her how to go nutting and bolting on weekends.

A brief update.

The bike is loaded up, enroute, and probably about 5 hours away right now. She said it's everything that she thought it would be. She's pissed cause she couldn't find any grits in Tennesee.

The MSF class is already scheduled, I got it for her as an aniversary present. I just thought she might wait till afterward to go "shopping".

I AM better looking than Brad Pitt, at least in my dreams.

Lastly, Dewars gets the best peanut gallery award for, You need to have a "Harley Intervention" soon.

I'm sure this will be an ongoing saga. I'll let you all know how the MSF class goes. Thanks for the support.
