I heard there was a crash in the Sr. TT in which the rider and two spectators perished. Anyone know anything about this as I haven't had time to look?

Found it. Terrible.

One of these years (after I win the lottery) I'm gonna go out there for the races.

What defines a Tourist Trophy race as opposed to another kind of road race? I cannot seem to find that info by Googling it. I am particularly curious because for many years, on many motorcycles, I ran the plate TOXIC. I have been out of biking for 4 years, and someone took my TOXIC. I am awaiting my new plate which reads TTCHMP. In that some will probably think I am a Tourist Trophy Champion, I want to be literate about the event, and I know nothing about it other than I know there is the Isle of Man TT race.

By, the way, the genesis of the license plate is that I am the State of Floria Time Trial Champion (a bicycle race run against the clock).

BTW, this is what a time trial bike looks like - they are more expensive than a stock Bonny!

Very similar to a bicycle time trial race, at the IOM TT the riders startn at 10 sec intervals indivdualy ( a few years they used to start in pairs ) and it is the time taken to complete the given number of laps that is the deciding factor in who wins. The fastest riders usualy start first for safety and spectators can tell who is making up or losing time as the riders pass them, the comentary on the radio from three points round the course also helps to keep you informed.

No problem, Its just a little bit faster, unfortunatley a competitor and two spectators where killed on the last lap of the last race this year, very unfortunate and sad. As bike riders we know the risks and nobody forces us but ourselves to do or watch such events. This guy is very lucky, Richard Quale, also known as the milky bar kid.

Ouch! That kid is lucky to be alive. Now one would think that bicycle time trials are very safe. Quite the contrary. On October 30th, 2005, I was competing in a time trial. Time trial bikes are made to go fast in a straight line, and are not very maneuverable with extra skinny tires, disk wheels, etc. I was approaching the finish line at a high rate of speed. I had passed everyone that started ahead of me with 30 second intervals, and I guess the official was not expecting anyone to arrive yet. He suddenly stepped in my path, and I tried to swerve my bike which was doing about 30 mph. I don't remember the rest, but according to witnesses, I flew over the handlebars, and speared the ground with my head. The result was a broken C1 cervical vertebrae, an injury that is immediately fatal in 50% of the cases with residual deaths in the days following the trauma. I spent 5 months in a stiff brace.

Ouch. I think I remember watching a police man standing out in front of the pack at the Tour de France taking a photo and causing a major pile up. guess through the lense he thought they where further away than they where.

This link might help explain a little about the races, and also what the bikes have to be...
