Some of my uncles and friends with alot of cruiser riding experience say that for the first 5000 miles on a bike I should not take it on the highway much. They tell me that i should use the bike around town and for short bursts on the highway to make sure I ride the bike at all gears and RPMs to break in the engine.

The dealer I bought the bike from says that there is no such thing as a break in period.

Which do I believe?

In your case, I would believe neither of them. I guess the dealer never read an owner's manual which clearly defines the break in. As far as your uncle or friends, I find their thoughts on the subject amazingly incorrect. Think about it - how could an engine possibly take 5000 miles to break in? Perhaps you meant 500 miles.
