I won a $100 gift certificate for powder coating on a local poker run. My idea is to use it on the lower fork legs and powder coat them black. I'm wondering though if I should go with a flat black to match the Speedmaster's engine, or have it gloss black to match the front fender? If anybody out there has done this, which way did you go and do you have any pics?
Also, how bad of a job is it to pull the tubes out of the legs and put it all back together?

I would go with gloss black to match the fender.

I think I'd go with the gloss as well.

SalMaglie, Removing the fork-legs isn't that bigga deal. Release the pinch bolts on the upper and lower yokes and slide-em out. Of course after the fender, the fender brace, the brake calipers, etc., are all removed. BTW, it makes sense that while you have all that off to install the fork-gaiters (see pic below). -BT
"Speedmaster" is a title not a name, - and the title is not plural.

I'm not sure what all it takes to pull those legs apart. I kept mine together and had the legs painted.
There was a topic on this and I remember that a plastic piece would strip or something when pulling apart. Might be worth looking for that info.
Gloss black sounds like a good look. I think you'll be happy.

Already got the gaitors on and I thought the black powdercoat would go with it. I got a chance to talk with the guy who runs the powdercoat shop that I won the gift certificate from the day of the run, and he said the fork tubes had to be removed for him to do the job.

Anything new on your bobber project?

Sal,
I'm going through some powdercoating dramas right now. I had my lower legs (and a bunch of other parts) powdercoated satin black. Upon reassembly, by mechanic is telling me that some paint got inside the castings and now he can't reassemble them. He sent the castings back to me and I cleaned them as best I could. I didn't see any residue.
Long story short, the mechanic still claims he can't reassemble them so I had him ship everything back to me and I dropped them off at another dealer.
I could have easily performed the work myself, but you'll need new seals and not knowing what other little clips and seals were needed, I thought it best to have a Triumph shop do the work as they can get whatever parts are needed. I hope to get them back this week.
If I had to do it all over again, I'd spray the assembled lower legs with Polyurethane paint.

Sounds like a nightmare Mike, and I hope you get the bike back together soon. I've never replaced the fork seals on a bike, so I'm certainly wary of doing it. With the problems I've recently had with a leaky petcock, plus other things going fubar around the house the last month, I'm thinking I better wait until the planets get realigned for this one. Yup, I'm gunshy right now...battle fatigue. Btw, I thought you of all people would have one of those parts microfiche CDs you can buy on ebay and other places. I'm seriously thinking about getting one now.
