Lighten up D. Its humor for crying out loud. You'd be rolling on the floor had it been turned the other way. Oh, by the way, do they still wear those stupid looking football helmets in Cincy?

Please.
I love Top Gear and Clarkson's over-the-top delivery, but these aren't the matchups that any real american gearhead would make. For a second, towards the end, I thought they were going to put that 40-YO superbird up against the Ferrari in an actual race. That would've definitely pushed the absurdity level beyond the bounds of humor.
(Disclosure: My main cage is a VW Golf and I have 2 Porsche 914s so I'm not some blind American automotive jingoist - I luvs me some German engineering and build quality - but it's my '65 Mustang that gets the precious space in my garage next to my TBA.)

A viper or Z01 would would eat up that little toy car, leaving nothing but little yellow "pellets" behind. Who names a sports car after a flower? And the Caddie Freakelade or the fat-in-****** wannabe hummer against a Land rover? Where is the Rubicon Jeep 4 door wrangler or the real H1?
Thanks for posting- this was entertaining!

Anyone ever see a race between a Viper and a Bristol Fighter? That would be interesting to watch since both have Dodge V10 engines.
Of all the cages I have owned, a '58 TR-3 and a '71 Jensen Interceptor rate in the list of favorites. The electrics were terrible, the Jensen had serious rain leaks and weak brakes, and both tended to twist off the wheel mounting studs, but they were a lot of fun to drive.
I've had 3 German cars, a '58 BMW V8 saloon, a VW 1600TL and a Capri V6. So much for that wonderful German "engineering". The only way I would ever own another German car would be if I was forced to choose German or French and it was free.

i think a better driver in the mustang, or if the guy had more seat time it would have won, and i would of liked the off road race to be everyone going to same way.

Ignorance at a high level, nothing more. The Lotus uses a Toyota engine, the LR uses a BMW still ( or is it the American Duratec ? ). As for a Ferrari, try to keep it running for long without major time to keep it going, and major cash to do the same.
Why wasnt a Vette used to run against the sport cars? Perhaps cause the results would be different, just like using an H1 against the LR, heck even a good ol Jeep would beat the LR ( and the LR definitely NEEDS the 24 hr free road side service, the break so often in regular driving ).

Top Gear is an great show. I got a kick out of it when they tried to bring it to the US...I dont think it went over so well. I dont think its a big secret our cars suck at road racing. I also dont think its a big secret americans have always been more interested in straight line racing than europeans. I also dont think its a big secret our cars sound very different! Its obvious that cars are cars and you love em all one way or another...even if you love to hate some of them

everyone going the same way and a real Hummer not one of those city versions. I don't mean the military version but the 1st street version that was like the military version.
The stang might have won with a better driver ,yes, and a viper would have crushed it or even an old Cobra 2 seater.
All in all amusing though.
P.S. I like the American exhaust note much better.

Dont underestimate the Range Rover. Even with all the amenities its a fairly hard core 4x4. A good Wrangler would have made it...WTF with the Cadillac though? Cmon...22" rims going off road?
I forgot to comment on this as well.... the Stang has an interior and is comfortable. The Lotus...its stripped and is designed to be road raced. There is no interior, no radio, no AC.

But is not the Capri a Ford car for european market?
Obviously, different tracks need different cars. An american car, Viper or Mustang will never win in strong twisties or small roads and mountain climbing, against a small wheelbase lightweight <100" (less than 1800cc) european or japanese car.
My brother loves his Peugeot 106 Rallye 1300. It's poor in low end torque, but faster and with a better handleing than many other cars bacause it's small and with a better power/weight balance. A wonderful toys on our Alpes climbings and twisties... And with a not expensive racing kit you can race on minor and AMA rallye categories.
What makes better our Triumph 790/865cc engine is that it can revs faster and higher than any Harley's big displacement heavy flywheel and other mechanical components. DOHC 4 valves makes better performance with smaller displacement. American bikes still follow the old rule of "nothing is better than cubic inches". Does it means that nothing is better than a proudly made in USA engine, or nothing is better than pure displacement numbers? The entire worldwide automotive engineering has demonstrated they're both false assumptions. Americans don't make finest automotive engineering, and cubic inches are not the cure for anything.
Just because growing in displacement the engine grows in torque, and growing in torque you loose reliability, so to don't loose in relyability you have to oversize every parts of your engine and your chassis. Oversizing enginee and chassis you put on weight, putting weight you spend lot of the torque and power achieved by the big displacement to move the extra weight.
That pushing sensation comeing from torque and big displacement is just a sensation, and nothing more...
That's why I/WE love this medium weight/displacement America/Speedmaster.
For me it's the intelligent cruiser I was searching for. Fast, handy, lightweight, good mileage, relatively poor maintenance. And nice looking.

Gee, Ed... I don't know if I was blessed with exceptionally good Capris or you were cursed with a bad one - But have fond memories of a 73 and 76 - Both great fun, both highly depenable (albeit, rust prone) and perhaps the best all-around cars I owned during the 70s and 80s - maybe not equalled until the late 90s.

During the 4x4 segment the first thing I thought was the Escalade and the H2 Hummer are practically the same vehicle underneath the skin. Let's get an H1 or a Jeep out there. Bollocks!

Robert, my italian friend... Just as you recently undercut some very valid points about "all things Americana" when you overstated your position regarding the american rationale for a certain venture to....(ahh, but I digress)...I believe you have fallen into your very own trap yet again, sir! You see, just as HenryHawk notes, the Z06 Chevrolet Corvette would have been a much worthier opponent to that admittedly very cool little Lotus, than that Ford Muscle Car would have been in this obvious mis-matched comparison. In fact, the Corvette would have pretty much annihilated that little Lotus in just about every category imagineable. Yes, EVEN with that "old outdated" american pushrod motor, sir. A "notoriously" bullet-proof motor that can now get upwards of 24 MPG while blowing the doors off just about anything that doesn't cost at least FIVE TIMES(can you say "Prancing Horse"?) what it does. Don't believe ME that the latest CHEVROLET CORVETTE is not only a WORLD-CLASS AUTOMOBILE, but also is BY FAR the most "Bang for the Buck"(I'll tranlate that from "American" to Italian for you, sir....."It's a one'a bada assa motorcara, Goombah") that one could possibly purchase today(no...not even CLOSE to an overstatement there, sir), then I invite you to scan almost any internationally recognized automobile publication out there at your local newsstand to see what their opinion might be about this american designed and built automobile. (Now, is there any other issue you'd care to discuss at this time....be careful....I'll be looking for that "overstatement problem" o' yours, dude) (and they think those lousy Limeys are "droll", HUH?!)
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

Dwight you are too much! You must be an attorney, and I want you to represent me if you are. It always amazed me that my C5 Corvette got better mileage than my PT Cruiser, yet I comfortably could drive the Vette at over 150 mph! Even the C5 would spank the Lotus. The C6 has taken it a step beyond, and it would be ludicrous to put it up against that undermatched (albeit fun and cute) Lotus.

Sorry to wake up an old thread, but I wanted to research this Mechano guy after the recent controversy.
I have just one observation on the above - tell it to Ferrari when the FORD GT40's finished 1, 2, and 3 at LeMans. I believe that road has some twists in it. And I believe the race lasts 24 hours, which is about the ultimate test of engineering excellence.

The worse car I ever owned in my life, and I have owned over 40 of them, was a Fiat Syder (Italian made of course) - what a piece of mierda! It's favorite bad habit was to vapor lock everytime I drove through NYC trying to get to LaGuardia or Kennedy from New Joisey. The best car I have ever owned was my C5 Vette.

In my foolish days, I was on a field job and raced a Fiat 124 Spyder back to our hotel in the middle of the night to see Neil Armstrong land on the moon. I was driving my 1964 Ford Fairlane with the 289 V8. The Fiat might have had a chance if its engine hadn't caught fire trying to keep up with my cubic inches.

I tend not to let any hint of nationalism enter my buying decisions. It's a global market. I've got 2 American vehicles, 3 German ones and one British motorcycle. Oddly enough, I've never had a Japanese vehicle. Nothing against them, I've just always liked my VWs. I really liked my old GMC Yukon but that thing was a gas hog, even before gas was over $3 a gallon. Needless to say I don't drive my Jeep pickup unless I have to.
Speaking of Japanese vehicles, I had to drive a drunk friend home last night after poker in his Honda Accord (late 90's I think). Then I rode home with another friend in his Honda Prelude (mid 90's). Hondas may be the bees knees when they're new but they were both underpowered rattletraps and neither car aged very well. I'll keep my '94 VeeDub thankyouverymuch.

Im not very nationalistic when it comes to cars. I can think of quite a few US made cars that are simply bril, but the same can be said for cars from just about all of the major car producers on the planet. Every nation has its far share of Classic/Brilliant/Innovative cars as well as Lemons.
Most people know me as being in love with Jaguar, all of them Old and New. Simply adore them. Particualy the V12s.
And Dwight...Ditto your comments on the Corvette. For the money, that is one seriously good motorcar. WOW!!!

That's true. He put down the food, then showed several people that clearly disagreed with him.
