Well- I dropped two 1 3/4" round 24" long exhaust extensions off at the chrome shop. My intent is to push the fishtails out to the rear fender. The thief on the other side of the counter told me it would be $120.00 and he might get to it in about three weeks. He'll call me when they are ready. I asked if he was using platinum!!! Has chrome really gone up that much? This sounded waaayyyyy out of line. I was thinking $20.00. But, every shop in town said the same thing. Anyone know of anywhere to send them off that is cheaper and does good work?

It's not the cost of the chrome its the cost of disposing of the extremely toxic waste. I would imagine ins. isn't cheap either.

Yeah,it's chromium cyanide solution,EPA is a bear on that, got a guy that does chroming in Atlanta, cost to chrome all those stock grey painted take-off stuff you see on eBay is as much as you would pay for new factory parts from Triumph.Even a little small part is in the 40.00/50.00 range, also takes a lot of time on the anode for the process to complete

A buddy of mine had some parts chromed for his car and I remember him saying that he sent them to someplace in Mexico because it was alot cheaper. (no EPA rules) Not sure if that is still the case but it wouldn't hurt to look into.

$20 is a dream. Actually, $120 sounds reasonable. $20 is what we pay to have a single license plate frame chrome plated. And we're LUCKY if they have them in 3 weeks. I hate dealing with those guys (plater's). And they're ALL the same. We've been through 5 plater's in 4 years.....

USA is between that few countries to do show quality triple chrome.
Other countries did lot of complaint to USA, China and some ohers who don't want to take accord to stop doing it, because of lot hexavalent chrome pollution into water that is able to create also genetic modifications in vegetables animals and people...

So EPA started to put lot of taxes on companies in this business.

Anyway chrome works are expensive because of the preparation time to spend on every piece. They have to be clean and polished both mechanically and chemically with acids.

Pick the pipes up tomorrow. I have to make the decision to weld the baffles to the end of the extensions (The fishtails slide over the extensions) or drill a hole in my fishtails for the bolt keeper. Either way, one end will not be secured. Wouldn't they rattle?

Not sure what baffle you are using but the short 4" baffles I used in other bikes over the years never rattled when held in with the 1 bolt. They always fit faily tight in the pipe too though.

I picked them up today. They did an okay job. Whatever- I'm fine with it. I asked them why it was so expensive, and they said the chemical disposal was a part of it, but most of it was labor. From start to finish, it takes four people touching the part to do the job. I asked if there was tax on cash and waved a 100 dollar bill at him. He said no- handed me the pipes, and stuck Ben in his pocket.

The baffles are 10" sansom baffles. The are OD 1 3/4. I could easily weld them to the end of the extensions I just had chromed. Still don't know if I should try that of just drill a hole in the fishtail and just use the screw.

Well, I'm out tothe garage

Couldn't wait. I ended up welding them in. There was a cheater weld ring from the factory where they used a buttweld on the pipes and the fishtails when they built them. I filed the ring until the baffle fit inside, tapped it in about half way on the ring, hit it with a couple spot welds, and done. They will never come which may not be a good thing, but oh well. Its done and there is no damage to the chrome.

The extensions are on, the fishtails are mounted, and aligned. I'll fire it up tomorrow after the hi temp has a chance to cure and I triple check I wiped everything down completely. It's probably still loud...

In hind sight, I think it would have been better to buy some fishtail end caps and weld them to a pipe of the correct length then chrome the whole thing. As it turned out, the extension seam is not visible, so I got lucky.

I'll post pics tomorrow, barring rain all day.

Well. I took it for a spin and it sounds cool, but man did I give up some horsepower... I guess the length of the pipes and the 10" baffles are choking it down.

From the few things I've had done or quotes I've gotten from reputable platers, that sounds WAY TOO CHEAP. I hope you checked references on this place. There are plenty of chrome plating horror stories out there. A guy in my 'hood had his rear fender plated. After about a year, it turned copper. Looks unusual, but not exactly what he was hoping for.
