I am going to complete my freak alternative now, take my airbox out, already drilled the bottom, going to cut out the restrictor plate in front of my carbs, and have a K&N air filter on order. My local mechanic said he put a freak on and used 142/45, and 1.5mm of shim. (located in TN) I am thinking of going with the same jetting setup with the freak alternative. How does this setup sound to you guys?

06 BA, TOR's, 17T front sprocket, 135/42, needles shimmed, AI removed, drilled airbox, K&N air filter, desnorked, SM seat and risers, drag bars, pro-grips....let's ride!!

Is this the hole in the bottom of the airbox and single K&N drop-in mod, or the gutted airbox with K&N pods? Not sure what you mean by cutting out the restrictor plate?

I originally ran with the hole in bottom mod and K&N drop-in. With TOR longs 132/42 with 1.5 shims was plenty. Anything beyond that was too rich at my altitude.

I have since gutted the airbox and use the pod filters with 150/42 and 1.5 shims and Thunderbikes. I'm happy with this current setup.

I think the restrictor plate is the snorkel inside the airbox that has a hole on each side for the carbs? It is maybe an internal baffle of some kind? I never thought of gutting my airbox and slipping some pod filters on. I would like to keep my airbox in a condition that will let me return to the stock air filter if need be. Is there much of a power difference between the TOR longs and the drop in K&N with the box and filter drilled vs. the T-bike and the pod setup?

Then remove it all together and put it on a shelf and installl the Freak. I saved both of ours and the AI systems just in case.

I was in the same position as you are. I didn't want to spend the cash on the freak and if necessary I wanted to fallback to the drilled out airbox if required (ie. botching the hack job). So, I picked up a spare airbox for $25 from someone that went the freak route. I think there is one for sale now in the classifieds. I still ended up saving about $200 on the job.

Though I don't have dyno numbers to prove it, I honestly believe the pod modification and Thunderbikes is a significant improvement over the KN drop-in holed airbox with TOR's. I've had both. The pod-TBIKE setup requires "at least" 150 mains, where I wouldn't have gone beyond 132's with my original hole-TOR setup.

Looks like your heading in the pod direction anyway. Might as well dive into the deep end of the pool as you're about to get dirty anyway.

The job is much easier with the Freak and like Dog said, your original airbox is intact ...... but it is about $200 more than DIY (assuming you have some basic tools in place).

Sorry for the late reply ......

Regards,

Tom
