Can 1157 bulb replace the 12v 21w/5w Tail Light?

This was posted on the old forum but no-one replied. Inquiring minds want to know. The 1157 automotive bulb appears to fit but may have specs of 12v 25w/7w (or something like that). I guess the worst thing that would happen is a brighter light but I want to make sure it won't blow fuses etc. How about replacement turn signal bulbs?

I do believe that is the replacement bulb isn't it? I'm not next to my parts fiche or manual at the moment. I'll probably replace mine with a 2057 when it requires replacing, it's just a bit brighter than the 1157. I did the same with my car as they needed replacing.

Thanks. What would you use for the turn signals? Those bulbs look like the 1157 only the side studs are not staggered. The 2057 is just a higher watt bulb, right?

One thing you might want to consider is this little jobber. It's made for the KLR650 but fits the TBA/SM tail light perfectly.

It's WAY brighter than an 1157 bulb but draws much less power.

It has a very cool X pattern AND it can be set to flash. I get tons of positive comments on mine.

The turn signal bulbs are a single contact bulb so (1156) If they make a 2056, that would work I suppose but I've never seen one. My chart at work classifies bulbs by candle power and the 2057 is slightly higher than the 1157.

I had a look at that before I built my own LED taillight. It's a good module at a reasonable price, but my main objection to it in our bikes is that it doesn't offer any licence plate illumination. I considered also getting a licence plate frame with LEDs to light up the plate but figured that was all getting too silly, so I designed my own LED taillight that also does the plate.

Mine doesn't flash on brake light (yet! I'm working on that) but you can get external flasher modules that'll work. It's a simple circuit to build and there's a "howto" on my website for version 1.0. I've since changed the design twice using the funky HyperFlux LED's that're used in the KLR650 light so it's much smaller and neater, and I'll be writing up a "howto" for that soon too. Should cost you under US$40 to build and take about 3 hours with a soldering iron.

Good point. I forgot that I added a 4-LED bar (white) facing up on mine to fix that problem.

Very cool. They remind me of how the transit bus tail lights look. They have that flicker to them that kind of gets on your nerves but you CANNOT miss them. They definitely add some safety. They make them for bicycles and called Cat Eyes. Anyway, I'm getting off topic.

I did a comparison between the original bulbs in my '05 and the 1156 (turn signals) and 1157 (tail/brake light). The 1156 and 1157 bulbs are brighter than the originals because they are a higher wattage. When it is time to replace a the turn signal bulb, I will have to do it in pairs so one isn't brighter than the other.
