Greetings All,
I have been in love with the TBA since the moment I saw it about 2 1/2 years ago and have been reading posts on this site for about as long to pass the time until I could get one. 2 months ago I found an 04 Green/Silver TBA at a local dealer on route 66 that had just come off of a trailer, and I bought it on site before any work had been done. After 1 month of learning how to ride a motorcycle (on someone else's bike) and getting licensed I have been smiling non stop at the realization that everything about it has been better then I imagined.

Okay, now to my question. How much of a "clunk" is normal when shifting from neutral to 1st, and then into 2nd? I have done a few searches but couldn't find anything on this topic so I apologize if this is old stuff. BTW, this site is absolutely fantastic to say the least!! You all have already helped me in so many ways.

Clunk is into 1st is normal...don't worry about it a bit.

I don't have any clunk shifting from 1st to 2nd.

Yep, it's normal.
When you do your first oil change, be sure to use full synthetic. Makes the trans work much more smoothly. Since you bought used, I'm assuming that you don't know what kind of oil is in it right now.

bigbill,
I have already done 1 oil change for that exact reason, to know what is flowing through my bike. Mobile 1 full synthetic 20W-50 for the Oklahoma Summers. I have a noticable "clunk" into 1st and a slight lurch forward. I have a slight sound going into 2nd, and smooth all the way up from there.

Like everyone else has said the 1st gear clunk is normal. From 1st to 2nd should be smooth. You might hear it if you have quiet pipes maybe but should feel smooth.

Andrew,

Welcome to the site.

All our bikes have some level of "clunk" when shifting into 1st. For me it is usually the worst when shifting into 1st gear, after the bike has been off for several days. This is what I do to help reduce this. Before starting the bike I put it into 2nd gear and with the clutch pulled in I roll the bike forward. At first you will notice some resistance, and then it will go away. Then I shift back to neutral and start the bike. By doing this you are releasing the clutch plates and allowing oil in between them.

On my old Bonnie with kick start, I'd pull in the clutch and kick it through a couple of times, to "clear" the clutch plates, very similar to Tom's suggestion. It works....

Welcome to the site! You will soon be nuts like the rest of us.

Your clutch plates are hanging up. When you shift into 1st just after startup, it's normal for the bike to lurch a bit because the plates stuck together overnight. But when it hangs up in the 1-2 shift, something needs adjusted. Your clutch might not be completely disengaging. It's not a problem in 3-4-5 because those shifts don't really need a clutch anyway.
And I'd be willing to bet that it doesn't downshift while stopped very well, does it?
Adjust the clutch and see if that works.

Like he said adjust the clutch (cable). You can probably adjust it at the adjuster on the hand lever. I should only have a slight free-play in it: too much and it will definitely "clunk".

Angelis, I am down in OKC. When I get a little more confident on the bike, you have got a deal!

BrainT, You are right on, it does have issues down shifting while stopped. Thanks for the information, I was thinking about adjusting the clutch cable but didn't want to mess with anything if everything was normal. YOU GUYS ROCK!!

Quick update, it was indeed the cable. I was surprised though how little I had to adjust it and now everything is very smooth all the way through.
