So the instructions I found on removing the air injection valve and tubes say that after I remove it I need to make some adjustments to the carbs. Is this necessary? The bike seems to be running fine and I don't hear anything unusual while running. (not sure what I should be listening for though) What is the consensus on this? I don't feel skilled enough to make these adjustments myself so if it is absolutely necessary I guess I will end up paying a shop some coin to do it. I was just wondering what ya'lls take on this was. THANKS!!

I assume you mean you've installed an airbox elimination kit? If you also have aftermarket pipes, you definitely should re-jet. While the carbs are loose is the best time to do this (and also the perfect time to replace all of the screws on the diaphram covers & bowls with the socket cap types).

Use dinqua's jetting calculator to get started.

I think I mispoke, I removed the air injection valve. I used this kit http://www.newspeedmaster.com/html/ai_removal_kit.html
The instructions say I need to make some adjusments to the carbs after removing the reed valve and capping everything off. Does that make more sense? I also have stock pipes. Sorry for the confusion. Thanks in advance for any tips!

Gotcha! Then the air mixture screws should be adjusted (see the Tech Vault, scroll down to Adjusting idle mixture (pilot) screws) and the carbs should be balanced...

Like Phil said. All very simple. All this is outside the carbs (no dissasembly). Idle air mixture (pilot) only affects bike at idle speed, but helps keep pipes from turning blue and helps at initial throttle-up. Depending on your year of bike, you might need a special tool (cheap)or the remove the pilot cover caps (easy and one-time deal).

The carb synch is for about 2000 rpm and more. If your bike runs good now, you can wait, no hurry. No need unless/until you want max performance/smoothness from whatever bike setup you have at the time.

you can even avoid the D tool if the carbs are off. You can carefully turn them out with thin needlenose and either replace with slotted type , thumbscrew type , or use a dremel with cutting disc to carefully cut a slot in the D area. I did the latter.(free)

THANKS!! This was very helpful. I just got off of it and it seems to be running smooth so i think I will hold off making any adjustments until I notice adrop in performance. Thanks again!!

A piece of copper brake line can easily be formed to fit and turn the screws.
