I am familiar with the grunge brush - I use them on my bicycles, but I also use a chain cleaner that clamps on the chain and hastens cleaning. I'm about to make an order at JC Whitney, and wondered if anyone is using one of the devices that clamps on the chain to enhance the cleaning process? Are they worth getting? I noticed that one came with a 16oz bottle of cleaner and I believe the cost was around 25 bucks.

More often than not I have found that a brush is not necessary. Some shop rag soaked in Kerosene and held loosely about the chain whilst spinning the rear wheel does OK most of the time.

Old sock with a little kerosene on it, spin the wheel (engine off), works fine.

But, but, but, has anyone used one, and what do you think of it if you have? BTW, if you do use kerosene, is the chain ready to be lubed immediately or do you have to rid the chain of any residual kerosene?

After you clean with the kerosene, wipe all excess off, you can even blow with an air compressor to get excess off. I then wait until it is throughly dry and put on new chain wax. If you don't you'll end up slinging more of the new stuff off and less will get where you need it.

Yes I've used one and it works very well. It's nice being able to brush 3 sides of the chain at once. The bristles don't mind solvent and stand up to the abuse quite well. The only minus is that it tends to throw the crap off the chain onto everything within a yard or so.
We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

That has been one of the objections I have using that kind of device on a bicycle chain - tends to make a mess and then I have to clean my rear wheel, etc. I usually use a rag and some degreaser. I guess like the kerosene and rag crowd here (which I will probably become part of).

Someone posted about using a garden sprayer to clean the chain. That sounds like a helluva good idea. I'm thinking some heated bulk WD 40 through a garden sprayer would do a fine job, followed by a heavier lube to follow. I've been reading a number of reports of long term WD 40 use as a cleaner on O ring chains with no damage done. I'd be inclined to believe that's true. It's not a great lube, but it's a fine solvent.

Don't waste your money.... After three or four cleanings the "gizmo" will have lost most of its effectivness and it will start making a bigg mess. I'd save the 25 bucks and put it towards a big bore kit

If you want one of those 3 sided brushes to clean your chain go to pet smart or one of those kind of stores. They sell those for brushing dogs teeth. It costs about $5 there.
