OK, I am finally getting around to posting this as I alluded that I would in my "Home Safe" post. Stewart (Roundy77) and I left Chy & Di's at around 9:30 that morning. We headed out on 52 towards 75 through the Chatahoochee (I like saying that word) National Forest. Got through there and had to stop and fuel up. No problem, piece of cake. Pound a coffee thingy and finish my smoke and then head out. Stewart takes off first and I then exit the gas station. Of course I am looking over my left shoulder checking for traffic. All of a sudden I hear this loud "tink - tink" kind of sound from underneath the bike. What the F*#k was that. I look down. I look back. There is this kind wet, slickery looking trail coming from what appears to be my bike. Immediately pull over to the shoulder. Stewart does turn around and come back in a minute or so (unlike some other folk I know of). We look under the bike and see that my oil filter has a dent in it. We decide I need a new filter and oil. Stewart drives to the Autozone (fortunately nearby and open on Sunday) with a list of oil filters that fit the bike I keep in my wallet (thanks Pat and the Techvault). He returns with a filter, 4 qts of oil and the brilliant man even remembered to grab a small funnel. So I climb on the ground and Stewart stops me again and hands me a pair of latex gloves. Have I mentioned what a great guy he is. Anyhow, I know the filter should come right off as I just did an oil change right before the rally. Lo and behold, it does! Well here is what the filter looked like and the associated piece of road crap that caused the difficulties. Don't think I would want to have been in that vehicle. Losing brake shoes in twisty mountainous roads must be fun, fun, fun. So just one more gratuitous shot of what it looks like to do a road side oil change on the bike. Gotta say, got real lucky with the time and place this happened. Was Real fortunate to have been riding with a guy like Stewart. Not sure if I have shown him my true level of gratitude for him being there and providing the assistance that he did. Lesson learned: keep an oil filter in the bags, at least on the long trips. You can usually score oil somewhere. Even if it is not the right type of oil, it can at least get you to somewhere that you can then do the job right. Again, thank you, thank you, thank you Stewart. Really glad it was you I was there with!
Ride On!

Wow! Keith you the man (and so is Stewart)! The name of the gas station behind your bike speaks volumes.

Oh yeah, just to add, Stewart came back with 4 quarts of oil. I thought to myself: hey self, we won't need half that much oil. From hearing the noise to shut down was about 25 yards or so. Well, in that time, I apparently lost three quarts of oil. Holy crap!!! Stewart's genius shows through yet again. 3 out of 3.8 quarts in that amount of time. Man am I really glad I wasn't at speed. Heck, I may not have heard it or even seen that dam oil pressure light come on. We all know how great those things are in bright sunlight.

Now you know I would NEVER leave you on the side of the road! I'm just glad I was there to help (and take pics, couldn't let this go undocumented), like I said earlier, the one thing that pissed me off was that nobody offered to help in the time I was gone...

Thats something else. Lucky guy you got it shut down when you did and save a costly repair and need for a truck. After that story I think I'll carry the list of filters too!! I have always worried about the location of that filter and damage from road junk or a rock.

Another thing to do is carry a list of Triumph and other MC shops along your route if you ever need assistance.

So, you are saying our oil pumps work really really really good?

Maybe we need some sort of filter helmet. The shell of a slightly larger filter to slip over the stock one...hmmm. Time for beer and TLAR engineering.

Cool idea. I had one go rusty in the winter of 05/06.... yeah I know, but I blame the salt on the road. I was gonna cover it in foil this winter, but it didn't really get that cold this year.

I have been thinking of making a filter relocation adapter. I never liked the location of the stock filter.

exactly, or kinda like "Safety Joe", or maybe better "I'll fix your flat tyre Merle".
Glad it worked for you Kieth & you're roadside assistance was paid up. I've noticed when loading the bike in the truck (ya, ya... I know ), if the angle from the ramp to the endgate is too sharp the filter will hit first, or when using the Sears lift, the filter has a knack of getting in the way.

The gas costs the same but the tax is higher. Thank your politicians. The ones here in the US that are currently screaming the most about the high prices are also the ones who want to tax us the same as you.
We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

Keith, The way you take care of that bike, I'm glad everything worked out. I printed off the list of replacment filters and I bought a filter to pack into my bags thanks for the tip. One thing about riding a Triumph you always have someone watching your back. John
