My grandfather used to talk about putting a spark plug in the exhaust of old hot rods to make the "flame-thrower" effect. I never really considered doing anything like that but the topic makes me curious. Would that hurt an engine? Isn't there a chance it would ignite everything in the pipe going right back into the engine? The idea sound like a cool novelty but also a little dangerous. I think it would look cool on my "off road use ony (wink wink) america" but not if it's at the expense of my ride. Any thoughts?

They used to do it "way back when" when gas was 10 cents a gallon. Really only works when the motor was running REALLY lean and left a lot of unburned fuel passing through the exhaust. Internal combustion vehicles that can actually burn the exhaust gasses like that are SERIOUSLY inefficient. If you can actually ignite your exhaust, you are really wasting a LOT of power.

yes rich is the condition that would allow that and at the same time crud up the combustion chamber and possibly wash the lubrication off the cylander walls. Greatly decreasing the life of your engine. I have heard of it being done. I have never personally seen it except in a movie.
Could be done with a small tank of propane with no damage if a nozzle was put into the exhaust before the end maybe.

Mostly back in the day of manual chokes. Pulling the choke on a warm engine and firing the plugs in the exhaust would make a flaming effect as the raw fuel was burned. These plugs were fired using a separate coil set-up. I wouldn't try it on a modern engine. Plugs (the ones in the engine) foul too easily and don't readily self-clean. Unlike point/condenser or magneto ignitions.

My Turboed import does it when I get off the gas after a run.
