Doing a little maintenance on the wife's Legend the other day and I notice what looks like oil on the coolant filler cap.
So I drain the coolant and it is very black and smells kinda oily. I have never looked at the coolant before other than to check the level, so who knows how long it's been this way.

I had already drained the oil and didn't inspect it closely but it didn't look out of the ordinary - kinda brownish I guess.

I initially thought I just needed to balance the carbs but after seeing the coolant I suspect the problem is worse. I was hoping it could just be dirty from the hoses or radiator itself, but considering how well it runs at the moment, I think it may be a blown head gasket.
It starts very sluggish from a stop - like one cylinder isn't firing until 3k RPMs or so. It seems strong enough at high speed but from a stop it is very 'sputtery' - best I can describe it.

I was able to check the #3 plug and it looked fine. I couldn't get #1 out (same socket wouldn't catch - seemed like it couldn't go deep enough but it worked on #3?). I didn't try #2.

BTW - it looks like balancing the carbs on these triples is a tough job. My hands aren't that small to get to the middle carb. Is there a trick or a tool for this?

So, any ideas what the source of the trouble is? Should I just take to to the shop and see what they come up with or are there things I can check that will narrow it down?

the blown head gasket seems reasonable given your symptoms.
a leak down or a compression test may give some insight

I never wanted to lead, and I never wanted to follow. I just wanted to ride.
