Just found something I've been looking for forever, the old style Halcyon WWI RAF goggles w/ GLASS lenses. Got mine w/ prescription and "foto-grey" and couldn't be happier. Check them out at: www.rxsportoptics.comedited to add: Mine came all black, no chrome effect.

Thanks for that link. Looks like the prescription lense option may be cheaper than some "brand" name products.

Congrtas on your purchase. I've had a pair since 1993, on my third set of replacement straps. You won't be disapointed in spending the $.

Real glass? How are they for impact? If they arent made and tested for impact, picking pieces of glass from the eyeball sounds a bit tedious.

Read the guys ad, some kind of safety glass, don't believe impacts would be a problem.

Looks great. I wonder if they do no line bifocals? I hate having people see how old I really am

No better than 'real' skull, I'm sure.
I agree with your concern. There was a time when all industrial, safety eyewear was glass - sure it was supposed to be shatter resistant (and perhaps was ?)and was the only means to make eye wear that was suitable for clear vision. But plastics have come a long, long way in the ability to supply optical grade clarity, impact resistance, scratch resistance and perhaps most important to the user - light weight. Just my opinion, but I'll no longer own or wear 'glass' glasses for any purpose.

On the other hand, whenever we drive our cars we are surrounded by safety glass not plastic. Many years ago a beer sign blew off a tavern in a windstorm and struck my windshield shattering it (that's my story and I'm sticking to it ) While there was glass EVERYWHERE, the pieces were all very small and there were no splinters. How often are people injured by the pieces of glass released during impacts? I don't know but I'd bet someone here does.

In this day and age there is no need to expose yourself to the risk of glass being embedded in your eye. In Oz we have a standard for industrial eye ware, AS1337. In the U.S. it will be ANSI Z87.1. Let that be your guide You can have polycarbonate cut to your prescription, in most cases. you've got two types what Ladisney is referring to is toughened where the glass fractures and you end up with lots of little cubes of glass. Then you've got laminated glass, when that goes you get the sheet on the other side of the impact fracturing. Both types of glass result in shards or splinters that can harm you. It can come down to luck, I've been through a large plate glass window without a scratch ...another story I wear polycarbonate.
