Hi All,
This post might seem a little odd coming from a Brit but it seems the Speedmaster and America are not so loved in Europe as in the States? I've booked a test ride on Wednesday next at the importers for The Netherlands. I love the look of the bike and it seems to have good reviews in most places. To be honest I've fallen in love and the test is a formality :-) Before I go and do something stupid:
What can you guys tell me about the Speedmaster that I wont read in a magazine review?
Cheers and greetings from sunny Amsterdam,
Mick
You say I'm mad like its a bad thing!?

I love mine but didn't like the seating position I put America bars on the Speedmaster risers. I am fairly long distance rider and wanted to sit up straighter. I also wanted louder pipes so I could hear what the engine was doing and got rid of the air box and air injection so the engine could breathe better and with those changes had to rejet the carbs. My bike now puts out about 65 HP.

The only stupid thing will be walking out after the test ride having NOT bought one.
Yeah there are not as many over this side of the pond, but those of us over here are on the whole happy not to see one - other than our own - around every day (well I'm not anyway). And we love ours as much as the next person.

03 America - Pretty stock - except the TBS wheel...
06 America - missing, presumed in bits. With it's TBS wheel...
09 America - It's very blue....

Welcome Duiker. The mags will tell you all about stock bikes. I haven't seen any articles yet about mods. These bikes handle extremely well. I'm always surprised when I get into a tight turn how my Speedy grabs the road and just pushes onward. Get it, you won't be sorry. Plenty of info on modifications on this forum and members who are willing to share.

I agree with rwright - the handling is impressive. Last week I was riding the mountains of North Carolina where for the last 6 years I had been riding on a Speed Triple. This year on the Speedmaster was every bit as fun and I did not need to back off at all in the twisties. Test ride, purhase, and enyoy. And Welcome!
2001 TT600 Turbo - 162.47 mph - APS-BG 650 AMA Record
2006 Speedmaster - 111.101 mph on the Salt Flats
2000 Speed Triple - 63k memorable miles.

Mick, welcome to the site. The only bad thing I can come up with is WATCH YOUR CREDIT CARD!! LOL. Once you start doing the "customize" thing, it will seem you can't stop.
BA has Freak, 160mains, 44pilots, air mix3 1/2 to 4 turns, BUBS dresser dogs. Never had more fun on any bike - 2nd bike 2008 RIIIT

FULL TILT BOOGIE Buy the America for cruising. Buy the Speedmaster for a more sporting experience. There is no other 500 lb. "cruiser" on the market that has the lean angle and performance these two bikes afford. Add some shiny bits as you wish. I drilled the bottom of my air filter and air box, then had the carb needles shimmed (1 shim), and I am plenty happy. One day will buy some pipes to wake her up, but the stealth mode is fun, too. Honestly. I ride mine like a sportbike - knowing a true sportbike would easily out-maneuvre and out-run me, but NOBODY on a Harley Davidson is going to keep up with me on a cross-town ride through Houston. Same goes for any of the other 700 lb. cruisers out there, regardless of their displacement. It's a best-kept secret.
Keith Houston Ridin'Texas '04 Speedmaster AI removed, Pingle, UNI Filter, 1 shim, straight-through slash-cut TORs, Stage 1 DynaJet, 140 mains, 3 turns, 16/42 final drive, 115K 2020 T120 Black

You can't pull a stoppie on a Speedmaster. You can, however, lock the front wheel at speed if you try hard enough.
Your passenger will begin to lose affection for you at about the 30 min mark with the stock seat. (40 min for new girlfriends)
A few cheap mods (mufflers, rejet) really open up the engine.
It's smoother than any cruiser this side of a Valkyrie.
You can embarass bikes twice it's size.
If you ride one, you'll HAVE to own one.

Hi I've had a Speedmaster since Dec 22 my own xmas present love it to death, done about 2500 since then. Did have a problem with one of the silencers blocked up completely, Triumph supplied a new one, back pressure with to much fuel going in had to get the AA (In the UK AA is a brakedown service not drinking to much. Had a good run yesterday 200miles plus well into the hills. Buy one tomorrow I would again
