Has anyone had any experience with this tool http://www.carbtune.com/bevel.html to get to the screw to ballance our carbs without removing the tank? It seems like a lot of money but if it prevents the removal of the tank when I ballance the carbs it would be worth it to me. Thanks

That's a lot of tool there. It's cool but do you need that much? I haven't tried yet but will a right angle ratcheting screwdriver work?

That looks real nice, but yeah, I'd at least try it with my 1/4" ratchet and a long bit in there. Worth a try before plopping down the dough.

Why not get Brent's idle mixture screws? Ok, $35 initially seems like a lot for such little boogers, but once you've used them a few times it's worth it. Much easier than messing with all that other stuff. http://www.newspeedmaster.com/html/idle_mixture_screws.html

He is talking about the balance screws not the mixture. I used one of those screwdrivers withe a spring like flex shaft was still a pain but doable.

Been looking for something similar to get to that pesky right rear bowl screw on left carb. Found this from Mac tools. Even has a D-bit. As for the balance screw, I've always used a phillips tip in in a ratcheting bit holder.

I bought stainless allen head screws for my carb bowl screws at Ace Hardware. Makes the carb bowl screws easy.

I have allen head screws for my bowls also. That left rear inside one can still be a son of a gun

It seems easy to me. I use a single key not a hand full and I put the long end up into the screw, also I put the screw on the end of the key to put it up into the hole. Have to be sure to put the outer rear on in on the left carb fiorst and run it in almost all the way so you don't have to fight with the idle adjustment bracket too. You guys probably do all that but there it is in case you don't.

BIGBILL, I agree, what it takes 3 minutes to take the tank off and is extreemly easy to take off and on. I'd take off the tank off and spend the cash on a set of stainless carb and engine allen head bolts, as Dogg33 mentioned. Probably the best, cheapest and practicle mod to be made after AI removal.
FYI, 70% of the Triumph twins are delivered out of balance from the factory. If a TBA or Speedy is having trouble maintaining idle at stops when warmed up, your carbs are probably out of balance.

Tank removal
Dont even need to remove the tank................
I just undo the bolt that holds the tank in place and lift the back up about 3 inches and install a spacer.(small piece of 2x4) Gives you enough room to work.

Allen Heads are definitley the go. My non triumph riding mates find it hard to believe that i can remove the tops and bottoms of me carbs without having to remove anything. just remember when you tighten them up, not to overdo it. It can be very easy to strip the threads in that soft alloy. I learnt the hard way 25 yrs ago.

To balance the carbs: I use a simple double ended right angle phillips. Costs about $2 and has no handle. It is just a bent rod with a phillips cross bit at each end, and of course each end is bent 90 degrees. The phillips ends have a staggered alignment so you can switch ends to get at any degree of rotation.
With this, I don't have to take the tank off or make any preps to adjust the balancer screw between the top of the carbs. Just attach my Morgan Carbtune and do it. Simple, fast.
Just wear some thin gloves, as it gets a little hot on the hands.

I don't dare show this quote to my wife. She'd have it done it needlepoint and hung on the wall. I've always thought most women work hard and most men work smart (er, lazy according to most women) If there is an easy way to do anything a man will embrace it eagerly and a woman will complain about it.
