I'm about to purchase a new speedmaster and want to dramatically alter the note. Would it be wise to run the motor in first before altering the stock set-up?

I think so. Just the first 500 miles then what ever you want. Less restrictive exhaust or a freak kit wouldn't hurt but I wouldn't run open pipes right off. The AI could come out right away.

I had TOR longs installed and AI removed prior to mile 1 with no issues.

TORs are the kind of pipe I meant. I wouldn't go drag pipe or gutted stocks right off the bat.

I put the BUB exhaust on before I ever rode it. No need to wait.

My Specialty Spares were put on at 250 miles because they weren't in stock when I bought the bike. If they had been, it would have been done before I took delivery.

i'm with you bob. i put specialty spares on with only 4 miles on the bike. haven't had any problems at all with it, and it definately beats the sound of the stockers.

The only problem you will have if you put pipes on straightaway is the temptation to run the bike faster than you should. I picked up my America on Sunday afternoon, worked all week and put the Epco pipes on the next Saturday with maybe 70 miles on the clock. That was nearly 4 years ago, and it still runs fine.

It is a valid question and I forgot to make one important point. The stock setup IS ALREADY ALTERED. The engine wasn't really designed to run with the AI, such restrictive pipes, or leaned out so much. All you are really doing in making the mods initially is starting out with a more properly set up engine.
