Is there any real preferance beteween the K&N replacement or the Uni?? I know K&N have been around a lot longer but is there a preformance difference? Durability? Effectiveness on filtering? Fit?
Thanks

I know the Uni filter is an oiled filter. They work very well and are washable and reuseable. Don't know much about the K&N but I do know K&N parts are known for preformance. The individual K&N pods like with the Freak kit are also washable and can be oiled.

I went with the UNI primarily because it was recommended by the manufacturer of my exhausts (Specialty Spares).

both the UNI and the K&N are washable and oiled filters. The UNI is a foam filter with a spring to keep shape. the K&N is cotten and screen. The UNI is saidto have better filtration protection, but the K&N flow more air. I've had both, both are great. The UNI are half the cost of the K&N, though. I sold the UNI and kept the K&N for looks.

I absolutely prefer foam filter. http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/airfilter/airtest1.htm
Sorry, dude (mechano), but this test is no good. For a test (of any kind) to be useful it must be two things- valid and accurate. Valid means it measures what is intended to measure. Accurate means it is repeatable. This is not repeatable. Too many variables that cannot be controlled. Day to day changes in weather, temperature, relative humidity, polution, what ever was in the bed of the pickup 3 cars in front of him, different roads driven, different mile on tests, etc. The test was not conducted in a controlled environment. There is no way for it to be proven or even assumed that all conditions were consistent between tests. Also, there was no control group tested. It is, in reality, just a random test. The guy wasted his time.
Also, K&N’s actually flow better and filter better when they are a little dirty!

Also- on the application were talking about here- our bikes- the UNI have less filtration surface than the K&N's.
The bottom line is either is an excellent filter and both are huge upgrades from stock.

I believe in all the dust I see into my carbs and the airbox when I've used K&N or JR (france brand like K&N).
I've used foam whenever I've found one for my application. And K&N/JR/BMC when I didn't find a foam filter.
To have the same performance of a K&N the foam needs to be kept clean. And I clean it every 3 months or 3000mi.

K&N most popular gauze type filter.UNI most popular foam type filter.Which is better gauze or foam? Both filter and flow about the same, but theres one other factor that gives the gauze type an advantage:oiled gauze is less flammable than oiled foam.If your bike sometimes backfires through the carb,be safe and go with gauze.

Erwin: I Decided to go with the Uni from Brent, they looked so even and the more I read the more I prefered the foam. It looks like our setup will be close when I'm done, I bought a set of T-bike pipes (Thanks Roadie) AI gone, Desnorkled, and ordered some new jets . I have at least 4-6 weeks to play since I just had Back surgery on May 2nd (More Good Timeing on my part)but not much choice. I ordered 132 Jet's as per Pat's jetting calc. hope everything works well together.

What about the foam breaking down in the UNI filter. How long will it really last?
