About eight months ago the speedo cable on my speedmaster broke in half. I didnt really like the speedo or where it was mounted so i removed it and put it in the box with all the other parts that have failed to impress. I recently bought a Drag Specialties mini speedo and tacho and this is when the problems began. When i ordered a new speedo cable i told the dealership that i read here once that Triumph shortened the cables as originally they were a little too long and would occasionally break the cable guide on the front guard ( I have an 03 model ). He told me he was not aware of this and there is only one part number. So as you can guess when the new cable arrived it was about 2 inches shorter than mine. I have relocated the speedo and was straining my cable as it was. No way would the new one go close to fitting even when manipulated all ways. I am going to return it to him next week and was wondering if any of the speedo cables on any of the other models, past or present, would be longer than the stock speedmaster cable. I had a Sprint Sports once and from memory the fitting at the front wheel is the same. I wouldnt think that Triumph would have multiple fittings on other models. The only model i can think of that may be longer is the carby model tiger. The fuel injected models seem to have electronic speedos. I dont know what else to do. I thought of having one made but Barnett are not that co-operative in Australia. HELP....

Unless they changed them that Drag Specalties mini speedo is going to fall apart in short order.

Well toady i managed to get my hands on a speedo cable off a 885cc Tiger. It is even shorter than the remanufactured oe for the speedy. All i can do now ( i think ) is swap my new cable for one off a Speedmaster/America built in 03 or earlier. I dont know what year Triumph began shortening them but the length i need is 1070mm. Prefer OZ enquires due to postage but will certainly consider all options.

Have you tried a repair kit from an auto parts store? They sell just the inner cable with various ends and you make your own.

Thank you sir, that is an excellent suggestion although the auto part stores in this country leave a lot to be desired. the inner cable snapped pretty much in the middle so if i can cut the ends off and attach them to a new cable with one of those repair kits would certainly solve the problem. I am still keen to swap my new correct length cable for an old incorrect length one but i suppose the downside is when that one wears out i am going to get to a point where there will be no more available from anywhere. I will ring around some part stores tomorrow and let you know how i go. I thought that i might go to some harley dealers and see if any of their cables replicate the bottom fitting on ours. My apoligies for my previous post to you. I was having a bad day.

My apoligies for my previous post to you. I was having a bad day.

I thought you were thinking about getting a drag specialties mini speedo. All I was doing was letting you know they used to be pretty cheaply constructed and didn't last. I was trying to save you some wasted money. As for the apology one wasn't required I took no offence but accepted in any case.

Thanks for the info. Hopefully they will be able to make me one. This would be a better option as the original long cable is ideally a little too short anyway. I can make it fit but there is very little room for flex (if any). I will contact them and see if they are capable of making one. hopefully stainless might even be an option.
