The front tire failed safety inspection. I have a set of Metzlers waiting in the garage. Only about 8k on the Bridgestones by the way.

Back in the day when I didn't worry too much about scratching up my rims, I broke bead and changed tires myself. Now that I'm older and a smidge wiser I'm hesitant to scratch my beloved chrome.

Should I put together this tool, mount and balance myself? or pay the outrageous stipend of $30 to the local Honda dealer? (add $9 for tube and band).

This sound like a fair price for peace of mind?

Thats about going rate.If you put a piece of leather between the tire iron and rim you won't damage the rim. They also sell plastic rim protectors that do the same thing.

If peace of mind comes from knowing it was done by a "professional" than it's worth paying the man. My peace of mind comes from knowing I care more than he does about getting it right. Changing tires can be a hastle but it's not brain surgury. I have had "professionals" put my tires on backwards and they have never been overly careful with the chrome or the balancing. Using crude tools doesn't mean the job is sub-standard or the tire is less safe. My confidence comes from good tires and knowing the guy (me) has a personal interest in the riders life. I just find more and more people mindlessly doing their jobs and wanting more and more money for it.

Looking at your setup for doing it at home I can’t quite see how you will balance it up after you have fitted the tire. Maybee I missed something.

I tried the Bike World do it your self method. It worked for the front wheel but would not break bead on the rear. Finally took it to the dealer and paid $28. per wheel to have the new tires mounted and balanced. I think it was worth it.

if life gives you lemons keep them because hey, free lemons.

The tool in the intial post was just for breaking the bead. I was thinking something along the line of this very unscientific means for ballpark balancing.

Thats is a very common method of balancing. The origonal post has a link to a tool they sell to do that between to even surfaces.(they say chair backs) But it's $90 I think a bit steep for that.
