Sigh, my nice '04 Harley Sportster 1200 Custom has gone today.
Now I'm looking around for a Speedy.
I can buy a new 2007, but I've found some pre-owned like new 2005-2006 models.
I've found a 2005 owned by a girl with only 1000 miles and two 2006 with near 3000 miles. Prices are similar and good, and both are 865cc.
Have been difference technically or esthetically in production between 2005 and 2006?
Is there something particular have I to check on this bikes when I buy a used one?
Can someone tell me if Triumph Speedmaster and America use SAE (inches) threads on bolts and nuts?

Other than some colour changes, the '05 and '06 are not significantly different. The '07 has different styled pipes and wheels, but no major mechanical changes.
These bikes are really well designed, and have no serious inherent flaws to watch for. Since the ignition is electronic, it would be a good idea to test ride the bike long enough to reach full operating temperature because, like everyone else's, the electronics can become heat sensitive.
Unfortunately, the UK went totally metric including the monetary system some years ago, so you will need some new tools.

Ok thanks.
For the metric question, WOW is a good thing for me.
I was completely bothered of that ****** inches threads and bolts on my previous Harley.
Difficult to do conversions between measures, and to find right tools and hardware here in Italy.
God made men with ten fingers to count, why use only one inch. Just jokeing...

This is just a theory, but have you noticed that the British empire seems to have pretty well fallen apart since they went metric? I'm thinking that converting between inches, feet, yards, rods, chains etc as well as drams, ounces, pounds, quarts, pecks, bushels etc. and trying to make change for 6, 10 and 4 when someone hands you 5 quid, 30 shillings and 2 thripny bits is what kept the Brit minds sharp enough to become a world power.

Hi Robert, If you are thinking of a 2007 the main difference in apperance is with the pillion footpeg brackets and the wheels. I have just purchase a 2007 America last week. very happy. hope to post some pics soon, when I can drag myself away from it

Why so big censorship in the Lounge area?
I wrote, in response to Greybeard, that if J. W. Bush starts to count oil in liters instead of barrels there'll be less wars in the world to support the "inches" empire...
Has that something to censor?

Lets not over look the catalyst in the pipes in the 07. Not sure if that is an issue for you but something to consider. 07 also has different wheels , sprocket cover , front peg hangers , black engine cases on both America and SM America having chrome outer covers , the pillion seat is different. Thats all I can think of not sure if I got em all.
I think it might have been seen as too political Mechano or possibly offencive to Americans, personally as an American I think you can say what you want thats part of being an American.

I've lived in US for a while... What you wrote is why I love America and americans, but I don't love american's governors.

I saw cosmetical difference between 07 and previous Speedy, I like more '07, but with '05-'06 at a so good price I don't think it'll go to change so far my life. I saw I can remove rear peg brackets and pegs can be mounted together with pipe brackets. Who did this mod has noticed more vibrations on pegs? Also sprocket cover can be changed with a nice small Bonneville Black's. The mods I'll do are airbox with snorkel removal, hole enlargment and second hole on the bottom of the airbox. I'm really sure with 2 big oval 3x2" holes and an UNI or K&N air filter that is twice as big as a pod (so the same as two pods on carbs) it can deliver the same good power/torque of a freak. With that mod I'm thinking to use a 140 main get and 45 pilot, with 3 or 4 shims under stock or different tuned TBS needles. AI removal of course. The pipe mod is a couple of by myself hand made 304 stainless steel pipes. My cousin is ready with it's bender machine into his car service at http://www.lamarmitta.it I want to build headers half inch bigger diameter than stock, without compensator pipe, for better flow and distinct sound from each cylinder. I'll polish them to a mirror finish. The headers soon will become bronze due to heat, I think it's not bad on a black Speedy.

Mechano, if the price is right, buy the low miles/km speedy. and for the gwb comment, I thought I read that politics were off limits here.(just like at my grandmother's house for sunday dinner).

Mechano I would be interested in seeing some pix of the new pipes your friend is making for you.
The peg hangers I meant were the front ones on the 07 I forgot the rear ones were different too.

When the bike will enter in the service we will build a couple of headers like this of my girlfriend's Suzuki LS650:
http://www.lamarmitta.it/component/option,com_zoom/Itemid,11/catid,70/
We got really a different power delivery on that big mono with a so huge header pipe because the stock was lot smaller than it appeared due a to a double wall construction. More acceleration, the bike was like a bigger displacement with a better breather engine.
The pipes will be two long 3,5" slash cut similar to stock ones. I'm still thinking if doing a common slash cut or a slash down...
The baffle can be a common holed pipe with fiberglass wrapping, but extractable. I can consider every kind of baffle configuration because I'm building my own.

Mechano,I think you have been poking around in my garage, thats even the same savage as my wife's bike. Color right down to saddlebags. How did she like the muffler upgrade, I have been trying to talk my wife into it. Also what did you do to the carb, that LS650 are jetted way too lean.

Cool, I have been considering the same thing. It will accomplish 2 things for me.1 Any bluing can be polished out without wearing through the chrome 2 eliminate the crossover pipe without plugging.

Oh no we didn't - you can still order a pint of beer in a pub!
And being the awkward bugger that I am, I always ask for imperial weights when buying anything from the deli counter at the supermarket!

Yes the Savage can be modded like Speedy, but the Mikuni mount shims over the needle's head than under it. Over the head there's a white plastic shim that has to be changed with a lower one. The main jet has been raised of 15 points, and the snorkel removed. I've been obliged to do this mods before mounting that header pipe, because idleing the header became incandescent red.
I've modified the panel air filter cutting the whole paper and putting an oiled foam panel.
Bigger power, from 32 to 42-44bhp that the clutch needed heavy load springs.
The noise depends on the final muffler and an Harley Dyna muffler can be used without any particular mods, only to couple the hole with the header.
My girlfired likes that noise because people hear she's arriving, and are a bit more careful walking or driving their cars.
