Decent looking bike and the owner is in my area. Can you experts please tell me about what the fair market value would be on this America? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2003-Triu...1QQcmdZViewItem

sorry Ian, that is way over. All that stuff he has on there ain't worth a tinker's dam when it comes to resale. I'd say that $5k is just about right, maybe even a little less. If it's in good shape, see if you can get him to take it off eBay and just buy it for $5000.
Have you seen it yet?

It depends how much are you willing to spend. And that is how much its worth to you. I have seen some for 6,500 and some for as low as 4500. The ones for 4500 sell quicker. As for the aftermarket stuff, are you planning on adding the same things if you bought new?

I couldn't guess at a value, but the description may lead one to believe it had the right care, etc.

Well, I am no expert, but I'll go ahead and throw in my 2 cents... I wouldn't have a problem paying $5000.00 to $5500.00 for that bike providing you ride it and inspect it very carefully. Look for obvious (and not so obvious) signs of neglect, wear and tear. Ask about the clutch. With a 19 tooth sproket I'm a little concerned that the clutch may have taken a beating. Thats a REAL tall countersproket for that stock 790 motor. The lower Rpm's are nice but it puts alot of strain on the drivline taking off in first. I would get rid of that 19 tooth and go with either an 18 (if you do lots of highway riding), or the stock 17 tooth (if you ride mostly in town). Good luck and ride safe! Scott

the 28% more hp from the t-bikes, is that a legit claim?

Motorcycle Consumer News March 07 Used Bike Value Guide lists it at 4630 at full retail for a stock America. Good luck!

Try doing a history on eBay of these bikes and the add-ons they carry and what they sold for. The add-ons never get you the retail or even close to what you paid for them. People that are buying one of these bikes for the first time do not know what you paid for doo-dads and even telling them "I've got $2000 of accessories!", they will probably say 'so what?'. The smart thing to do if you are selling is return to stock, get the best price, and sell the aftermarket parts separately. Quote:

I'm not buying that. When I shop a used vehicle, the book value is the FIRST thing I look at. Gives me a baseline.

My 2 cents, although its worth nothing.... I bet 5k to 5.5k would be fair. Although what do I know, I picked up my speedy in Dec, an '06 in MINT condition w/ BUB pipes (which I was going to put on anyways) for $5,000! He was getting a divorce and didn't want her to get it. I felt bad (well a little bit) for talking him down from $5,500 but hey, it was december... Merry Christmas to me Nice bike by the way, hope you can get it for a reasonable price she's a beaut!!
Black '06 Speedmaster, BUB of course.

I'm with Phil- book value is always the starting point when I'm buying....when folks personalize thier bikes, they know they're going to have to take a hit on accessories and modifications when it comes time to sell.

And it serves as a valuable negotiation tool when the buyer hands the seller a printout showing the wholesale value, so as to create doubt in the seller's mind as to where the price is set.

It also depends on how big a hurry you're in. If you wait long enough, a buyer will come along, ignorant of book values, ignorant of used accessory values, and buy it at your inflated price. If you're in a hurry, you better discount it. Sell the accessories separately (typically at 50% of retail) and sell the bike for book.

Dude, those aren't trade values which are far less then the NADA retail I posted. The 281.00 dollar America I got a little while back, on NADA is showing 3283.oo low, and 4317.00 high. The bike has close to 72 thousand miles on it. Would you pay more for it because it has a chrome cam cover, chrome fork covers, sissy bar and rack, paineers, TOR's, a light bar, and foot boards ? That's easily 2000.oo in upgrades. Average trade on my bike is about 1300.oo . A lot lower then the NADA retail. BY your logic, it's a 3300.oo dollar bike in trade value, and 5283.oo retail.I know this because I work for a Triumph, BMW, MV Agusta, and Ducati dealer. We use a completely different guide for trade in value, but I'll be glad to sell it to anybody for say 2000.oo To everybody.........last but not least, I have dealt with more then a few EBAY bikes. At least half have cost the new owners a bucket load of money to make right. I'd let a horse kick me in the nads twice, and a great dane hump my leg before I paid for any used vehicle I can't put my hands on and test ride / drive.

There is an 05 for sale on this site with less than 200 miles on it for $5,800.
The beginning bid would be its high retail in my humble opinion. Those extras make it a bit more attractive but do not drive the 03 retail value up they just make it more salable.
In short if you bid $5000.00 as the first bidder, you just paid high retail on the bike. If you get countered don't go higher would be my advice.

yup. You also need to consider it's a prime time sellers market. that same bike was worth $1000 less 6 months ago when it was snowing. Wrong time of year to buy - great time to sell- but then you have to buy another!
2002 Bandit 1200/ GSXR cams/ 1277 BB Kit/ Holeshot header and can/ 38mm flatslides/ a good head/lotsa hp/lotsa tq- lots of rear tires...

Just sold my America for approx $6400.00 if that is of any help- 2003 with 15k miles on the clock- Very sorry to see her go- but hope to be allowed to stay here to view and occassionally post- ( long story with the sale- wont go into it just now!)- might add that in UK- the market is strong to buy- if the bike is well priced and well kept.

Scott, The NADA retail on an '02 is $4760 with the listed equipment. So, I'd pay $6200 today (if i had the 6200 dollars). If you can get it for $5K, go ahead and steal it. Wait until there is 20-30 seconds left on the auction and drop you best offer. My 2 Cents!

Looks like Dennis here knows the secret of Ebay. And I'd also say you've got the "price" in today's market just about in the right area there too, Dennis. But "value?! How do you put a price on that? Especially when it comes to these (arguably) under-priced and often under-valued machines to begin with?
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

I can't believe this bike is still for sale! I am thinking of doing a road trip for it and I don't need it. Less than 200 miles with a grand in add-ons. With this still for sale, no, an 03 is not worth that much, there is an 05 for sale for that much. http://www.bonnevilleamerica.com/forums/...true#Post190516
