All I can say is WOW! I bought a set from Fast Eddy dealing with him was FAST! Now for the Lowers. I have the Triumph Summer screen and would get head buffeting. I'm 6' so I thought I'd try the lowers. Well coming into work this morning (32 degrees) the head buffeting was almost completly gone. I could read the speed limit signs. I have them mounted on the lower portion of the forks. That leaves about a 4 or 5 inch gap between them and the shield. I'll try and get a picture this weekend. I'm not really crazy about the looks of them but with the way they work I'll keep them on, at least for now. Again Fast Eddy was really quick with the shipping. Scott

It's hard to believe how much the lowers help. I was equally surprised when I fitted them too. I have a black bike, and painted the back of the bottom of the screen & lowers with black Krylon Fusion paint. They seem to blend in a bit more than when they were clear.

What did Fast Eddie get for them I'm thinking of getting a set, but woul have to move quick as we are leaving in 9 days for GA.
Two questions:
How much ?
How long from when you ordered until you got them ?

Hi, time for me to finally check in and contribute something here. I bought a 2006 America last year, and have a little over 7000 Km on it now. Found this forum shortly afterwards – it’s been an incredible source of info, thanks all. I had a problem with buffeting from the Roadster – don’t know why Triumph doesn’t deal with that! I ordered the larger Clearview screen but still had a lot of “tank air†so ordered the Memphis lowers. It was much better, but I still wanted to improve on it so I used an idea from someone else here. I put the two lowers end to end and built a template out of cardboard. I had a glass company cut them out of lexan, and I finished them with a sandpaper flapper wheel. The outer and inner cut-outs are to clear the light & dresser bars. It all works quite well. It’s funny, when I read the “to screen or not to screen†threads I think about all the plastic that I sit behind! Steve

Hey Big Poppy, They were about $83.55 including shipping. I think it took about 5 or 6 days. Maybe you could have him over night them to you for a little more. I talked to Memphis Shades and they emailed me back and said they didn't have anything for the America. They don't even know what they have. Just tell Fast Eddy what type of bike you have and he'll set you up. Try it you'll like them. Scott

Steve, Welcome home. You can unpack now. The Lowers are incredible. Memhis Shades sent me a clamp that fit the lower shrouds, but I had to make my brackets from aluminum angle. Your development is worth marketing here, whether members are using Memphis, Givi, National, Triumph or other screens. Contact Brent and FastEddy for marketing options. You've got the template, make some money getting it to the rest of us. I use a 19" Fats with lowers, and have had them both in every conceivable position and still have too much buffeting. Your design looks like it'll work. Please share.

Dennis

Hi Dennis, thanks for the welcome. These lowers have worked great. The air around the tank/seat/knee/waist area is calm, and there is no air running up the front of me. The bottom part of these lowers are the same as the Memphis lowers, so I don't think there would be any engine air flow worries. I expect that making these in smaller numbers for distribution would probably be expensive, and other than commuting, I'm not getting enough time for personal riding as it is. The parts are fairly inexpensive and simple to make. Probably the best thing for me to do, if there's interest, is to describe a tutorial with pictures on how I made them. My only requirement would be that anybody that makes a set would need to send me a rum and coke, and anybody that thinks they are a good idea would need to send me a beer. OK, now I'm pushing it too far. Steve

I'll cobble a tutorial on how I made them, hopefully within the next few weeks.

You mentioned that the gap was between 4 and 5 inches! If you switch the bracketts and flip them upside down it cuts down on the gap your talking about!

My father just happens to be in the plastics business and if I can get a cutout of your templet, I can work with him to fashion these for a small price.. or so I'm hoping he will work with me to do so. .... Eddy, maybe we can work out something if Dad is willing and they do not come out to expensive.

Steve,
It looks like you have a lot more suface area above the mounting clamp than below it. Does that make the upper portion "flutter/vibrate". If so, equalizing the torque produced by the airflow would reduce that (i.e. like a kids "teeter/totter"). Technically, it would be balancing the integrals of rXf for both top and bottom (perpindicular distance from mount to elemental cross-sectional area). In practise, you would increase the length or breadth of the lower portion to equalize out the aerodynamic forces. Of course, if no problem, then no concern. (Perhaps some of the upper air flow is already blocked or diverted by the windshield itself to help balance it?)
Nice job though. It really looks good!

Bill, yes it is two sets. Fast Eddy knows what size is used for the top ones.

Also, if the lowers extended even lower, it might help keep the cold wind off of the knees in the winter???

Hi Tom. That's a good question - I wondered about that when I was making them. The tops do "wiggle" a bit on the highway, but it really isn't a problem, and it doesn't affect the way they work. The air flow seems to be covered on my shins from about a third of the way below my knees (I'm 5' 11").

Perhaps another two inches lower would lower the wind blast from your shins to your "boot-tops" as well as reduce the "wiggle/flutter". Also, continuous vibrations can sometimes induce "fatigue" into materials.
Again, very nice job. I could be interested in buying something like that next winter.

Spoken like an engineer The brackets are solid, so I think that the flutter is more from the flexibility of the lexan rather than any counterbalancing underneath. Although this isn't a definitive understanding. The fluttering is minimal, and doesn't affect the air flow. You can extend the lower part as low as you like - personally I'm quite happy with the form it's now. I still intend on providing instructions on how to make these - it's fairly simple. Gotta find some time.

Upon closer examination of your excellent pics, the brackets look like they are mounted to the lower fork shrouds. That may be where the slight flutter is coming from, since they are not as rigid as the upper fork shrouds. Thanks again,

In the fall of 2005 I put a Memphis Fats and Memphis lowers on the Blue Streak. I was never satisfied with the lowers so I used some lexan from another project and made my own. I simply made a set about 5 inches longer than the Memphis originals and cut the top and bottoms to match the originals. Buffet reduction was much improved and they don't look too bad either. If you cut them yourself I recommend a variable speed jig saw and cut them REAL SLOW! Otherwise the plastic melts. As you can see, I basically centered the new lowers on the Memphis brackets. 12-13000 miles on them now and I'm very happy with them.
We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.
