Well, I just blew though the 500 mile mark on the new Speedie, what a ride! Anyway, I am just getting ready to change the oil, and I was wondering - just what does the dealer check out when they do their 500 mile check up. My dealer is a bit far away, and I would just prefer to do it myself. Any help would be great. PAW

look in your owners manual...it outlines what should be checked at which service....and I did mine myself so I have no idea...but most here will warn you about the dealer...I stapled all of my receipts to the service page so should I need to prove that it was done.....the oil stains help with authenticity

They make sure their pen has ink in it so they can write you up a bill. You are better off servicing it yourself. The stealership is supposed to check everything, from the chain tension to the air in the tires (in addition to changing the breakin oil and filter). What do they really do? Read the first sentence above.

Here's a direct link to the Service Interval Chart in PDF for all our bikes: http://www.triumph.co.uk/media/908_9.pdfDefinitely keep your receipts for all work done so you can prove it. You might even want to keep a dated photo of your speedometer with them too!

Doesn't not having this first service (along with the next few) done at a stealerships invalidate your warranty?

I took my motorsickle to the stealership for it's 500 miles service. When I got home I had to drain out TWO cups of oil. I couldn't see air in the sight glass at all. I still have that oil to this day 5 1/2 years later. I called them and they said I shouldn't have done that. Why ask I? Well we wanted to see were the oil came from! What is that word I am searching for? Hum...it rhymes with boron. Whew. I am getting worked up.
So,
Anyway, technically and legally NO you can perform all your services including the first 500 service. Having said all that 99% of the stealerships won't question your warranty IF you let them perform the first 500 service. The thing is you have to inspect everything they said they did.

Peter,
I wrote up my expericence with the dealer at the 500 mile ck on an earlier thread and will not bring it up again.
Needless to say I was lied to and ripped off basically the $300.00 I weasled them down on they got back $250.00.
Everything you need to know about your new bike you will and can find here. You will know it is right because no one is trying to make a buck off you.
I switched to syn. at 1,000 miles they told me they changed it over to syn. but I never believed them I doubt they even changed the original oil. Like a dummy I was riding around with 15 lbs. of air pressure in the front tire for a 1,000 miles.
Go over the bike stem to stern and check everything bolts nuts chain tires battery connections brake fluids, check everything then you will know it is done.
The one thing you will hear on this site it's your butt on that bike and your respondibility to make sure it is safe and road worthy.
By the way congrads on the new bike and welcome to the site.

I actually let the dealer do the first one, to get the little stamp but have done every one since, except valve adjustment. I left that one to the pros. When I saw that they wanted $100 for an oil change, I said forget that, even I can do an oil change. And to pay someone to check bolts and chain tension is ridiculous.

My dealer is 1 hr away. While its under warrantee I get them to do the services. I arrange for the bike to be done 1st thing in the morning and kick around the showroom and drink free coffee and read the magazines till its done. I find my dealer very good and the Techs out the back better. I always ensure they endorse the service handbook as well. While these bikes are usually pretty sound you can bet your B*!!$ if there is a problem the 1st thing they will look at is the service history. I have clicked 17000ks in 14 months and it runs like a dream.

As long as you record what maintenance you have done with date and mileage then your warranty will be fine. I did take my bike in for the 500 miles checkup, but I changed the oil and filter before hand and let them know, so I was not charged for that part. Ever since I have maintained a spread sheet recording all maintenance performed. I maintain the spread sheet more so I remember what I have done and when.
If it wasn't for a recall my new truck will never see the dealer (hopefully).

I put copper coat on my header nuts, just to make life a little easier later on in life. This was done after the stealership charged me a fortune just to change the oil and filter.
