It is a shame but in retrospect I can see why he turned them off. Complaints ,arguments, people offended. I think if people would have sent a private message to who ever had one they found offencive , myself included ,and asked if they would please change it instead of complaining to Phil there might have been a different ouitcome. And only bother admin. or a mod if it wasn't corrected.

That is a completely voluntary thing, nobody is ever forced to buy a patch. The option is there if you feel like helping to support the place that we all go to.

Maybe it was a moderator who noticed or got offended in the first place? We're members too... some people forget that. I don't mean to direct it at you Dog, just saying that a lot of times it's not a member complaining to us or whatever. IT's just one of those things that is just WAY simpler to just not have. It was turned on by accident in the first place...

I didn't take that as directed at me specificly.
as far as searching the net I never did that. The pic I used that I meant to be offencive is actually part of an article about this neonatzi kid who went off at a gay bar with a hatchet and semi auto pistol wounding several people then gunned down and Arkansas cop then decided to take on the state police there. Took 2 rounds in the head and is still alive...sort of. Same with the rest. Just junk I have kickin around my hard drives. I have 2 300 GB drives. If I look long enough I can probably find a pic of almost anything.

only thing that bugs me about "the Great Avatar Debate". Is that there never was a Grey gas tank. I'm asuming that that oversight will be corrected?...Or do I have to write to my elected representative?..or wosrt yet Dwight?

That you meant to be offensive... pretty much explains it all doesn't it???
By the way, I was extremely offended by it, and I'm a WASP.

I am still absolutely dumfounded by this avatar issue. How does such an every day thing found on just about every forum cause such a stir over here?

There's a lot of things that cause stirrs over here that wouldn't otherwise. Also, it kinda popped up by accident, so we didn't even have time to layout simple guidelines.

No, I hate to argue Benny there ARE guidelines... AUP states (And it's copiedandpasted):
The following constitute violations of this AUP:
b. Harm to minors. Using the Services to harm, or attempt to harm, minors in any way.
m. Inapropriate Content. Posting items in messageboards or photo galleries such as commercial advertisements, profanity, nudity, and pornography is strictly prohibited.
One kinda follows the other in my humble view. Innappropriate pictures can harm minors.
Why can't people just accept that this is a forum for all kinds of people? Including women that don't wanna see naked women. And that in fmaily house, children will probably have access to the computer where mum/dad checks on here. It is possible to look at all the pics that have been downloaded without being online. Some kids are too clever and I'm sure would be able to find them. It could mean that some people would have to delete all cookies/download files after every time they look on here. Just to protect them from seeing things that are not appropriate for them. Things that are not supposed to be on here in the first place.
Why can't all the people accept the rules that are set out? And that for the majority of the members the rules were set BEFORE they joined....
I wasn't gonna get involved but I'm getting narked by all this. People are not posting as much as they used to or are just not posting at all, and all because of stupid things like this. I'm not one of these - I've met some great guys through here, and hope to meet more in the future. But I'm gonna say I'm not leaving yet.
Guys just learn some respect for others... If you want, just think if a 90 year old prude of a mother/grandmother/greatgrandmother would want to see it. If not, then it's really not suitable for here...

Thanks Gina.
I joined this site to learn about my bike from the experience of others. I loved it so much that I volunteered to be one of the first mods here and although once in a while I regret my decision, it usually passes quickly because of the great people that are here every day and the friendships I've made from this site.
Although I'm myself, by no stretch of the imagination a prude I not only have to live by the AUP set by Robert, I also have to try and interpret what he would think to be accteptable or not. I err on the side of caution and take a stronger stance than what myself I would do. I feel that I am not the only mod who does this.
This situation or a similar one crops up usually once a year due to some new members joining the board mixed in with a liberal amount of cabin fever. With but a few exceptions the majority have seen our thinking behind this and have agreed. The few who have left have left over what they believe to be a stripping of their rights to be able to do or say what they wish.
Usually this situation comes in the form of photos.
"A picture is worth a thousand words".
And each person will only "read" that part of the thousand words which spring to mind first. I may see one thing in a picture while others will see something completely different. Many times the reasoning put forward is, "I don't hide things from my kids". I respect that. But I also don't think by saying that these people hang nude shots of men and women in their homes for their kids to see.
The internet is a tricky thing. Here I am sitting in front of my computer, in my home, in my town which is in a province in my country. Others are doing the same at their computers, but not even close to where I am. To complicate things even more we all visit a place which really doesn't exist anywhere on a map. Sure the site is hosted somewhere but for the life of me I don't know where that is right now. All I do know is it's in the same country as the guy who created all of this but not necessarily close to where he lives. To complicate matters even worse, this is not a publicly held company, it is a private website where no fees are charged for coming here, it is open to the public.
Now here is the problem when someone cries, "what about my rights?" Which rights are we talking about? Just because I sit here in Canada does not mean that Robert is held accountable to the laws of my land. What about England? Australia? Any number of other countries. Now lets toss in provinces, states, cities, towns? You see where this is going?
We as mods have only one page of rules to go by, the AUP. We follow it strictly. We don't have a choice. Phil is the only one that communicates with Robert directly and even then it is sporadic at best. I've said this before and I'm saying it again. Coming here is like going to someone's home. You respect the rules they set whether you agree with them or not because you would expect the same when they came to your home.
I do have to say that this has been one of the shortest and most polite "bumps in the road" that we have ever had. Thank you. Thank you to the new members who got it right away and thank you to the older members who stood by us and explained things calmly and coolly to the new people.
I truly believe that many people come here, that don't post. That would get turned off of the site if all we did was argue back and forth. I don't want anyone turned away because of that because those people should post their ideas, thoughts, and questions. I did and look what it got me. I gained many people that have gone from strangers to friends to family in a very short time span. I would like everyone to experience that because it has truly changed my life for the better. That is what makes this site unique, not just the lack of swearing and dirty pics.
.....well time to get off of the soap box and get back to my usually sarcastic and childish responses....

Yupp... thanks John & Gina.
I'm coming into this sooner than I wanted, but felt that I needed to have my say in supporting what I think this site is supposed to be. Robert Wade, and the others who work hard at making this work, have done a remarkable thing, and I know for me is a resource that hugely increases the pleasure of my bike.
So OK - this didn't hurt a bit, and ummmm.... hopefully this post works!

Excellent question Gina! I'm not going to reiterate what John said, suffice it to say I agree with him on a personal and practical level. Gina, if everyone saw the world in the same way, it would be a boring place. But it sure would be easier to keep track of things I wish everyone could see the obvious as well as you do, but some people just get all excited and post away, ya know? OK enough babling. I agree with you, people should be able to control themselves. It's just that some can't.

OK, I've sat back and haven't said much. I was blown away when I first found this site. Nowhere had I found a forum that did such a good job sharing experience and knowledge among people with a common interest. After all, our bikes are really not a common sight. I cruise with other bikes a lot and rarely do I even run into another Triumph rider. Here we can share hints on things that have proven to work, easier ways to do things, and let others benefit from our mistakes. There are a lot of forums out there. I for one, really appreciate the fact that the moderators make an effort to preserve the site's integrity.
Personal avatars was a good thought, but I agree it got out of hand. I do like having a picture of my own tank, but I'd remove it in a hearbeat to avoid flashing distractions while reading posts. It's as bad as those flashing ads on many websites. You would think that common sense would prevail as far as avatar content, but apparently it did not. No doubt, guidelines were in order.
I love to hear bike jokes and I find bike experiences interesting and entertaining. I do hope we can keep the site centered around the one thing that brought us all here. Whatever you feel will keep it together, you have my full support.

Interesting question, if I go down to the beach there is more on display there with people not even noticing it. However if I take one of those beach girls place them in main street the whole world will be up in arms.
So the question is debatable

Have all you guys missed the point here? This is a private website created and owned by one person. Sure it's open to everyone but when you signed up, you did agree to abide by the rules. There is no debate. We come into this wonderful house and we abide by the rules, period. Quote:
