It's been a month or so since I've seen him here. Anyone heard from our Hellenic friend?

That's very strange. He last posted on 3/10. I hope he's just off on a nice bike trip or vacation.

Been wonderin' about this myself. I keep thinking I'll send the learned gentleman a PM, but never seem to get around to it.

You're right! March 10th was the last time he posted anything around here!

(just figured he was a bit embarrassed that he didn't get me anything on my birthday after that date or somethin')

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

One of you said it's bikini season where he is. Well I know where I would be and it wouldn't be talking to a bunch of guys on a computer!! So I imagine he is just out doing warm weather things!

I don't think Beduoin/Thannasis has felt comfortable here ever since he was called to the carpet over his chosen username where some right wingers thought he was some kind of terrorist.

I sure miss his stories. I don't think anyone else on this forum has had the kind of riding experiences he's had in his lifetime.

Where is he from? What kind of stories? I have never read any. I have to admit when I saw the ID I had "terorrist" thoughts too.Was or is he actually Beduoin? I thought they were nomadic.

Would that not be spelled Bedouin the Islamic way.

Yes he had some great storied and he had travelled quite a bit as well as far as I can recall.

He's from Greece, and has ridden down to Africa on a bike trip 20+ years ago....plus who knows how many other places.

That sounds cool. Too bad I missed it. I imagine the ID was chosen for the nomadic connotation. Did people get on him for being Greek? I can't understand that. Or was it just the ID?

Don’t know I missed that part here as well, seems I have missed quite a bit that has been going on here in the last few months.

I hope Thannasis doesn't mind me posting some of this stuff. Check out this thread from a few months ago. Halfway down is a post by Gent talking about some kid on his way to Africa 20 years ago. Guess who that kid was? Thannasis is pretty sure it's him, because he gave me the intials of the Spanish TV beauty he was with 6 years ago. I never did hear back from him though in an e-mail whether or not he contacted Gent so I don't know how the story ends.

He said he took the name Bedouin from that trip 20 years ago when he was a guest of 2 different Bedouin families during his Trans-Africa ride.

Bedouin chose his nickname because of its nomadic connotation. The individual who attacked him as a terrorist was roundly condemned and was later banned from the site (I believe the only person ever banned) for his complete lack of civility and self control. With that one exception I think the general spirit of mutual respect, camaraderie and a little patience that is the nature of this site has been extended to all members of the BA.com community. I asked about him because I missed his friendly, experienced and well informed comments and the slightly different and cosmopolitan viewpoint he brings to this site. In light of the thread a few weeks ago concerning lost members, I am hopeful that Bedouin is either too busy to stop by or has simply moved on to other interests.

Hmmm. Derek I must have missed those? I dont remember reading where that occurred (someone treated him like a terrorist?) He is an internationalist and is liberal but if someone treated or spoke as though he was a "terrorist" than that would be way outa line.

If so ...that is certainly unfortunate.

I think this is a good time to step in and tell you a story about our friend Bedouin/Thanassis.
Around 2 months (Feb 14 2007) back I posted a comment on the Ewan McGregor thread.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Link to post

Yeah I agree, I caught an episode of that when I was back in the States sometime last year. I think they were in Mongolia or somewhere. Great adventure and a good idea to film it.

Scotland to South Africa this time ... that trip kinda reminds me of this kid that came through Valencia when I was stationed out here twenty years ago.
He was on a ride from Athens to Cape town in South Africa and stopped off here for a few days to prep his bike before crossing over to Morocco. He was on a 500-600cc Honda or Yamaha dirt bike.
One morning (I think it was his last here) I watched him drinking a coffee in a cafe while quietly staring across the water to Africa.
He had this look of determination in his eyes that I'll never forget. Couln't help admiring this kid's balls (the size of a tank), taking on such a journey on his own.
We later heard that he was caught and probaly killed by Touregs somewhere in the desert.
After a while some Germans coming back from Africa in a Landrover told us he had been seen alive a lot further south in Nigeria.
For a long time I wondered if that kid (I can't remember his name) ever made it to Cape Town.
Some local guys told me a few months back that he came through here again about 6 years ago on a tour bike (I hadn't retired yet and was stationed in Brussels at the time).
He was remembered by a few guys but the reason he was noticed was because he had this georgeous young Spanish TV celebrity on the back.
I just wish I had been here to ask him about his ride.

Yeah, I would like to see Mcgregor and Boormen do this one, it would also be interesting to sorta see what that kid did back then.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

A couple of days later Bedouin emailed me 2 photographs (one of himself and one of the lady I mention in my post) and a link to a thread on this board he had posted on more than a whole year ago (Jan 08 2006).

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
link
Derek,

I have also been following the 2006 Dakar race (motorcycle segments ... where possible) and did not notice anything on Boorman.
I once did a Trans-Africa bike tour (Morocco to Cape Town, down the west coast) but certainly nowhere near the pace these guys go at.
Just watching these guys (read heroes) makes me want to do something like that again (even if it is at a quarter of the pace) .

A man can dream eh? Sigh ... I'll just stick to the little Enduro riding I do every now and again on a borrowed bike.

Now, why do I get the impression you also have dirt riding in your blood?

--------------------
Bedouin.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

HE WAS ONE AND THE SAME GUY!
My wife actually cried when I told her (and showed her the pix) as she remembered him plus, for a while, we all thought he was killed by the Touregs we heard he encountered.
We were amazed for days, to say the least.

Come on Thanassis, show yourself! You can't have me worrying about you twice in my lifetime!

Good to hear you post on this Gent/Peter. I thought that was one of the most amazing "it's a small world" coincidences I've ever heard about. Who would think that you two would cross paths again on a Triumph board that's as bike specific as this one is? Truly amazing!

One further note, I have no recollection of philswill's political philosophy, but I’m pretty sure linking him to conservatism is an unfair swipe at those of us who are often called “right wingers.”

Not to take away at all from the topic but it reminds me of a guy I met about 10 yrs ago.He was from the UK somewhere I don't remember exactly where. Kind of nieve guy. He had built the coolest 3 wheeler you ever saw. the front end was a single sided swing arm like BMWs earls but only 1 sided. There was a small compartment at the back maybe 4' or5' tall and as wide as the trike. There was a shower that came out of there too and the water was heated with copper tubing coiled around the exhaust. Had a roof for the driver. 1/4 keg for a gas tank cut with a tunnel welded in so it sat over the frame infront of the driver. VW bug air cooled power but the whole thing was totally fabricated by him NOT a VW frame cut and modified.He stayed witha friend of mine for a week or so. He was riding his way all around the world. Very interesting guy. I remember thinking he was gonna get killed in South America. Makes me wonder what ever happened to him.

Man! You're right there, Larry.

Our boy in Idaho made YOU look like somebody who would contribute money towards NANCY PELOSI's next campaign!!!

Now....How many of us here have sent PMs to Thanassis, and have received zilch in return?

I know a guy like that. He's a welder in Londonderry, NH. They call him Moose. That sounds just like his three wheeler.

Good to hear you post on this Gent/Peter. I thought that was one of the most amazing "it's a small world" coincidences I've ever heard about. Who would think that you two would cross paths again on a Triumph board that's as bike specific as this one is? Truly amazing!

Derek,

I really thought it was an appropriate time to say something, although without Bedouin's permission.
I don't know if any of you guys have ever met our Greek friend but he sure left a lasting impression on me listening to him describe his plans to some of the local guys just over 18 years ago (he corrected me about the date in his email).
One would think he took on a massive trek such as he did every other day.
I can tell you this - I will never forget the look in his eyes gazing across the sea, on the day of his departure for Africa. Sheer guts and determination if ever I saw it.

Bedouin young man, when you get to read these lines and I hope it will be soon, be assured buddy that I salute you and hope I didn't cause you too much embarrassment.

Come to think of it, I find it a tribute to your modesty that you never mentioned our recent exchange on these forums.

Well i just hope he's ok, He told some great stories, I dont recall seeing the attack you guys are talking about either.

The "attacks" were PMs. They didn't say anything out open in the boards they just harrassed with messages. They didn't even have the courage to use their usual accounts to send the messages.

thats lame!! If you have something to say say it don't try and hide it. If you can't say it in public you know you can't say it period.How cowardly!! Saying something in confidence is another thing. I mean some critisizim or disagreement. I am not the most tolerant person but to unwarrentedly attack is low.

That doesn't read the way I mean it
