Before you go to all that trouble check the fuel filter. If it hasnt ever been checked and your bike is an '03, chances are good that may your problem. Or maybe you are getting enough fuel, but just need to re-jet.

I had a look in my Haynes book but there it has no mention of a fuel filter. I bought the bike december 02.

Down where the fuel line splits between the carbs there is a little screeen inside the tubing.

Pulle the hose where it attaches to the carbs and look into the carb barb/nipple.

After you remove the filter, don't forget to replace with an inline filter. See past posts on this subject......Angelis

So this hidden filter is in fuel line before the tee, not actually between carbs?

NO! The little "T" filter is actually right inside the T where the fuel line comes from the tank and is clamped onto the carbs. It is small and only goes in one way due to it's odd shape. Pull it out and install a small inline filter and it is way easier to clean later. The T screen is really tiny and plugs very easily.
If you remove it completely, you run the risk of small particles getting your floats stuck and leaking gas all over the place while you go inside...been there.

A word to the wise is not necessary. It is the stupid ones who need the advice. Pat

Something that seems to have been forgotten here is that some of the early Americas and Speedmasters had a problem with the paint flaking off around the filler neck. Your problem may be as simple as draining the tank and removing the petcock and "gently" cleaning the screens on the petcock. Then move on from there if needed.
My 03 TA had some of this flaking problem, and when I changed to the Pingel petcock I did find some debris on the screens. IMO, it wasn't enough to cause any problem. A few months ago, I removed the "t" filter for the first time and it was clean.....

Try a little Seafoam afterwards too.

I think I may need to get this done Pat. Were do I get this, at the dealer or an auto parts store? Also grump I had some pealing paint too. My other question is how do I address the pealing paint. Any one have any suggestions on what products are out there to combat this? In fact I'm going to the tech vault right now.
